Anyone have a Nintendo Wii

Posted on

Member Since: Jan 24, 2006

On a whim I picked one up in the store (they are hard to get so I grabbed one). Now I don't know whether it's right for myself and family.

I've read all the online stuff, just wondering if anyone here has first hand experience.

I plan to get Madden and throw interceptions just like Eli Manning.

We are thinking about getting one for the kids, a couple neighbors have it and they love it and the kids love playing it.

lmao, I think that's all Eli does in Madden too.

The Wii takes some getting used to, but it's pretty awesome. It's a departure from traditional gaming consoles because of controls obviously, but once you get down the dynamics of it, it's a blast!

I just got one about 2 weeks ago. And i agree with Keith. Most people buy one thinking "i know how to swing a golf club, so i should rock at Wii golf" which isn't the case. once you get used to the controls (which takes like... a day) its a blast, but for that first day i found it pretty frustrating cause i couldn't get the damn thing to do what i wanted it to do! The only thing about the Wii that i don't really like, is that there arn't many games for it that i like. Mario galaxy is a really REALLY good game though. Havent heard anything about Madden.

Oh yeah, like Herb said, invest in those wrist loops for the controllers!! They're eff'n dangerous!! I think they come with them for free now though... not sure.

And I agree with meltdown, there aren't that many games for it yet, and a majority of what games there are are geared towards a younger, simpler crowd. But Mario Galaxy is a really good game.

Thanks all.

This would be a family console since we already have an xbox360 for the "serious gamer"

I've had trouble locating games. Wii Sports should be good, Wii play should be OK (with the free controller) but beyond that there don't seem to be many well reviewed family games, Galaxy for example is not gonna work for everyone since it's a platformer.

Any fun/family/party games to recommend.

Yeah, it's kind of a "party" type console system. Wii Sports will keep many folks entertained for hours. Boxing is hilarious, esp. when people start "swinging" so much they get tired and have to take a break.

For a single player, Zelda is amazing from what I've heard though.

Yep, Zelda is great. It is a bit of an adventure. Graphics are pretty good on that one.

But indeed. As the photo above shows. Put that wrist strap on. And even then hang onto the control tightly. The wrist strap's have already been proven weak at best and can break with a heavy handed player swinging them. The neighbor's kid already cost them the price of a 50" flat panel as he tossed it right into the LCD and destroyed it. Don't let anyone play to closely to the screen.

But as well, we looked into them and found only a small handful of games that would fit in here.

PS3 is more what we need here so I don't think we will be doing the Wii thing.

I truly wish I could afford a Wii. If only for three reasons (Zelda, Metroid Prime 3 and Mario Galaxy. Alas, with my student wages it will have to wait.

I really do love the concept for the control scheme. Sure to be much more active, and even immersive with some games. Maybe even some light exercise heh.

I like the Wii, although I hear that the Madden port for it is terrible and buggy. I dunno, Madden 08 for PC is a great game but I'd be really interested in playing it with the Wii remote and nunchuck.

Wii sports that comes with it is fun but a little disappointing. The games are all very simplistic and not nearly as much fun as they could be. They have more of a feeling of a demo than a full-featured game. Full versions of those games would be a total blast though.

The funniest and most entertaining game is that Rayman series. Those rabbits just crack my wife and I up...I don't know why its so much fun to abuse rabbits but it just is. The Wii games that are the most fun to me are the mini-games, where you play a short challenge of some sort, and have dozens to choose from. Mario Olympics, MonkeyBall and Rayman are all games like that.

The one reason why I don't have a Wii of my own (I've just played my nephew's several times) is that it doesn't support hi-def output. How disappointing for a new-generation console! I'm holding out for the blue-ray DVD player that the PS3 is built upon. As soon as those things come down from a gillion dollars apiece, I'm getting one!

Tadpui, I'm with you on the PS3 as well. I'll be replacing both our second gen PS2' with them when the price drops another $100.00 after Christmas. And yes, it will according to an insider source.

AS for PC games, just got into BioShock. It is the most interactive PC game I have ever seen. By interactive I mean the environment is interactive. Hard to describe but I have not played a game that is this good. But one thing is it needs a good video card as the graphics are unbelievable.

I bought the Rayman 1 game so that sounds good :)

Bioshock on the 360 was great (since we got the 360 I've almost completely stopped PC gaming except for BF1942, not having to deal with that crap is great.

PS3 just isn't sticking out there but as a blue-ray player it's great providing you can use it in your family room. Of course Blue-Ray is only gonna get you half the movies.

Mass Effect is the "new" Bioshock

PS3 just isn't sticking out there.

I hope you're kidding. :-)

The graphics and processing are ten times what even the 360 elite can do. The game developers haven't even scratched the surface of what the PS3 can do yet. But the games I have played that are cross system on both the 360 and the PS3 are far better on the PS3 from what I have sampled so far. Although I have to admit the 360 has an edge on the released games at the moment. The after Christmas releases will be killer. The new Need for Speed Pro Street has some of the most intense graphics and usability I have seen on a console game yet.

The problem with the 360 here is it would be torched in a day from their overheating problem that MS doesn't seem to want to solve. The console is fine for casual players. But it can't take the use that the kids I know would put it through. These guys will get the newest release and play straight on through an entire weekend to try and beat a game. And the 360 can't take that kind of abuse without the addition of an intercooler.

And the Blue-Ray thing. Time will tell if it catches on. There are tons of skeptics that say it won't. But they said that as well when Sony brought out the Compact Disc too. It took time, but finally caught on I think. :-)

On the PC side of things, I've been completely addicted to "The Witcher" (definitely not a game for the kiddies) And yes, i'm an RPG geek. Love the music in that game. Blend of celtic/orchestral/world. I like the polyrhythm influences in the percussion. As for shooters, haven't tried bioshock yet, heard both good and bad about it. I have Stalker though, adding in a few mods really brings that game to life, particularly AliVe 1.6 (and a few graphic/sound uplifts help too)

My PC is not uber, unfortunately. I get by, but my old ATI 9600 all-in-wonder is feeling its age. .... wouldn't mind ditching the SBLive for an Echo Gina3G either. -cough-

I have a PS2, but I will probably never afford a PS3. I swear it's like the playstations have become the next Neo Geo system. Pretty kick a**, but uber-expensive.

i really injured myself on the wii. i popped my shoulder out of the socket or something for a second, it seemed like. great pain, and also the next day. whatever happened, it was instantly corrected, but the pain persisted. i yelled like hell, and there was much laughter.

the controls made instant sense, though. i kicked *** at tennis right out of the box. later i found that backhands aren't as easy as they are in real life: the tennis game sometimes seems to interpret a backhand as a forehand, especially if you're swinging from your crotch, which sometimes i just tend to do. but tennis and bowling essentially to me were almost like the real thing, and it was fun.

i don't own the thing, but it is sorta fun. it's just cartoonish, you know.

Ok ok Noize, I'm gonna step in on this PS3 is faster than the 360 thing.

Call of duty 4 = framerate issues on PS3.
Skate = Framerate issues on PS3.

Fact is, the PS3 is very powerfull, it's just such an odd duck with the CELL processor that devs are having a tough time optimizing and the games are living proof.

The video cards are very very similar in power. Neither one will provide a groundbreaking lead over the other.

The 360 has 512 RAM easily accessible, the PS3 has two banks of 256 that are accesssed quite differently and are proving difficult to devs.

The OS on the PS3 uses near 90MB (supposed to have been reduced in the lastest updates though) of it's available RAM while the 360 uses 32MB (they do write OS software for a living).

The 360 has a 3 core processor capable of 6 threads although one is constanstly in use by the OS. The thing is these cores are all general purpose and can do any task.

PS3 has only one general purpose processor along with 7 DSP's (although one is also in use by OS) that are good for floating point calculations and not much more. Games must be written across 8 processors of which 7 are limited.

Now... I'm not doggin the PS3 as I would like one myself, but not because of the rumor that it is faster. I think the processor itself will have more life than the 360's once people start figuring out how to use it best, hopefully that happens before the XBox720 is released.

Honestly though, if the PS3 is 10 times more powerfull then why would they not jack up the texture size, use higher poly counts, more dynamic lighting and a higher level of anti aliasing. They look almost identical and in some cases the 360 actually looks better as the PS3 sometimes appears "washed out" colorwise.

Sorry dudes, I am a gamer nerd to no end. I like both console makers, but facts is facts. Until someone finds a way to unleash the PS3's SUPER POWERS (Uncharted: Drakes Fortune is closest yet) it is an equally powered console in comparison to 360.

Last but not least, you can get a PS3 for $300 right now actually. Apply for a sony CC and buy it at any qualified vendor, Sony gives you $100 back. Maybe that is the insider scoop you heard of? Looking for the link now.

sonycard.sony.com/sonygat...&PROMO=DF01

I also think you still get free movies so the deal is even sweeter. I believe it is 12 months no interest on this deal.

P.S. 360 is still hot, but new units have the better heatsinks out of the factory. The same heatsinks the install if you must send it in. I have a release 360 that I leave on all the time, it has never had a problem. I can game for 8 hours a day when the wife leaves town, leave it on for hours as I'm out, then come home after the bar and play some more. Although it is an issue, it is not a guarantee. We also use it as our DVD player and for music since the ipod works so well with it. Honestly, it is on at least 6-8 hours every single day and many times more.

We're PS people in my house. We started back with the original and "Riven" and we're now on PS3 (the PS2 was 'relegated' to my son's room - he's five and a wiz at Ace Combat).

It's pretty cool. The six axis controller takes some getting used to, and I miss the "buzzing" from the old Dual Shock controllers.

Resistance: Fall of man was pretty cool, and the Pirates of the Caribbean is way cool.

Love that Blue-Ray too. Very crisp.

Now that I'm done writing my novel. I own 3 PC's, a 360 and a PSP. My next purchase gaming wise is a PS3 probably where as the wife wants a Wii, I guess mine isn't enough for her :(

But your's is such a wee wii

I also believe the 360 holds up well against the PS3 but in many ways that's not the issue. The games are better on the 360, they play better, and there is a much bigger and better online community. Perhaps the PS3 will get there but not yet.

The one thing about Sony is that the Japanese market gets sooo much more before we do. I wouldn't be surprised if there are wonderful things coming on the horizon for the PS3.
One cool thing I've liked about the PS series is that each new generation still plays the old games.

We use ours as our primary DVD player, plus the games. My wife burned through the Tomb Raider series, so I guess she'll get the Anniversary one for Xmas...

Actually last weekend, I was doing a live rap performance at my friends house party. The dj they hired to play tunes had this crazy, ableton live/ms pinky (encoded vinyl that controls audio off your laptop similar to serrato)/several midi controllers set up. He was using a wii controller to interface with the laptop, mainly for selecting songs (I think), that he would mix using the ms pinky vinyl. It was pretty tight. We were messing around where he would record/sample what I was freestyling, and then start scratching the vocals a couple seconds later.

Also, theres a youtube out there somewhere of someone using the wii controller as a dj instrument (ie turn your wrist for scratching, use other wii controller as crossfader...). Dude looks like a goober, but it's interesting.

As someone who fairly avidly reads the gaming sites I am not aware of anything especially amazing for the PS3 on the Horizon. A solid set of games for sure but nothing earth shattering seems to be coming.

PS3 would be a lot more palatable for me if (a) Blue Ray was the only HD movie spec and (b) to use the blue ray the system would have to be in the main TV room and that can't be occupied by gamers.

I think little big planet looks pretty revolutionary for the PS3. But I also think Allen Wake for 360 is going to be amazing.

Allen Wake is from the same guys that did Max Payne and if there is one thing I know Max Payne graphically, was leaps and bounds above other shooter games around it's release. Highest quality textures I had ever seen at the time.

The machines are both kick ***, it just takes kick *** devs also :)

Tripps, that is kinda what I was getting at about the games not being developed yet to take advantage of the PS3.

I got to play a demo of a cross platform game for the 360 and PS3, which I don't recall the name of it. But it was stunning and took much better advantage of the power in the thing. While I do love a lot of the games on the 360, such as Forza and the like. I still can't justify one in this house as stated above. It would burn out in a heartbeat. And I'm not up for having to return one to get another that has already suffered the red ring of death, only to have it bunk out again. If they truly solve the long term use over heating issue I would definitely be up for one.

But ya, for true kick butt graphics nothing beats gaming on the PC. The boyz are begging me to set up their PC to switch to the TV so they can play on that screen. But I'm thinking of just getting them a 22" flat wide screen as I just saw one on sale for just under $200.00. Its an ACER, but it will do for them.

But I will wait for the games to come around and start using what Sony intended the PS3 to be for.

I used to be a PC gamer but the pain of constantly keeping up to date etc. got too much. I am happy with the 360/PS3 now that their power has moved towards the PC level.

To me the Wii is something altogether different. I don't think anyone should be choosing Xbox or PS3 or PC or Wii

It's more like, pick one of the first 3 and then decide if you want a Wii also.

I gotta agree with you tony. It is more a matter of how you play, or what you like to play. I can venture between the PC and the PS without much loss. Although I prefer driving games and such on the PS and first person shooters. But the PC is great as well for FPS games and a few other slow moving games.

FPS is awesome on the wii! ive been playing medal of honor 2 online. I was never able to play FPS on the typical console controller it just never worked. I think because i was used to a mouse and keyboard(quake2,3 and unreal days). The wii controller works just as good as a mouse and keyboard and im starting to think its better.

I have heard great things about MOH on Wii, best console FPS controls ever is the claim.

And Noize, the issue is fixed on the 360, you just have no way of knowing which you get until you open the box :) The new ones will have HDMI is one indicator, if it has that then the new heatsinks are also installed.

I downloaded a really cool free app that lets you make music with a Wiimote. You can trigger samples, control a simple synth and do various effects with filters and stuff.

For actual game playing I REALLY like Wario Smooth Moves, which consists of a load of mini games that you have to coplete on each level. Hours and hours of fun. Wii Sports is mega too, but other than that I haven't actually bought any games in a year.I use the virtual console a lot though to download bits and pieces, like old Mario games and stuff, which is cool.

Still waiting for a good driving sim to come out :(

On the Wii front, I don't know when it's going to be released, but they had some awesome screenshots from a new ghostbusters game for it. Aiming your weapon, sliding the trap, capturing the ghosts, all there and looks to be a ton o fun. Looks like it may be multiplayer too!
