Anybody could tell me what PCMCIA firewire Card would work with the FA-66 and a HP Pavllion dv9000???

I need the card to be able to send power to the FA-66 without the dc adapter

I contacted edirol and they couldn't give me a straight answer. They heard that the Texas Instrument card could work but he wasn't sure.

Itught that any 6 pin firewire card would work but apparently not!!!

Roland/Edirol have probably the goofiest lvl1 techs I've talked too... But I really like my FA-66 :)

You want a texas Instrument chipset on the card... many brands use that chipset and I can't really name one... I'm just using the onboard firewire on my PC.

Yep, I will second that. If you want it trouble free and a good easy install go with the Texas Inst. chip in the adapter. A good computer store should be able to tell you what chip is in any of them. The cheap low end ones will probably not have the TI chip though so stay away from those.

Thanks guys so what makes the TI chip works well with the FA-66??

My main concern is to get power from the card.

I can't find anything on google!!!!

I've tried a bunch of search but the closest I got a PCI card or drivers...

Most of those devices such as the FA-66 come with a factory recommendation to use that specific chip. And it seems as though anyone who has not had any problems with the units getting flaky from being under powered or just plain dropping off while running are using the TI chip. Most of the cards and MoBo's that are using them are a bit higher quality then the others. And it seems that the logic on the chip is just better suited to run these type of devices.

I honestly don't have an exact technical spec for what makes them work better but I am sure it is the better quality that has a lot to do with it.

So I guess my best bet would be to take my laptop and card and go visit a bunch of computer stores, and make sure it's a TI chipset.

I've tried all kind of searches on google but nothing comes up.

And the guy that reply to my email didn't know either which model was supported, all he told me is that TI seemed to work

What brand and model of card is it? I might be able to look it up in the morning.

Otherwise if you look in the system device manager it should show up there as well and may be identified.

They are all compatible with the laptop itself. But they may not work with the firewire interface. It is the interface that is picky about what chip it uses in the interface itself.

Do a search on the forum or anywhere and you will find that the TI chip is the most reliable to use.

Finally here's a reply from Roland

Greetings / Salutations!,

Please use the FA-66 with a direct 4 pin Firewire connection into the Motherboard (and plug it in to DC power) and not a PCMCIA Firewire card.
The FA-66 cannot be powered with a 6 pin Firewire connection under Windows.

Best Regards / Sincèrement vôtre,
Roland Canada

Is that make sense?????

I think they meant it can't be powered by a 4pin...

"The FA-66 cannot be powered with a 6 pin Firewire connection under Windows."

I still don't get that one.

Ya, the 6 pin is able to carry power to a firewire device. The old 4 pin version was not able to do that. I think they have it backwards. But it may very well be that the card will not accept a 6 pin to power the unit. It will let you plug it in but will not send power down the wire.

It says in the FA-66 manual in order to get bus power you need to use a 6 pin firewire,

My laptop is in repair, I can't wait to get it fixed so I can take it with the FA-66 and test a bunch of cards.
