Yeah the holiday put a big dent in my free time. I have no excuses for the rest of this week though. I've got a start but I need to do vocals and that's where most of my projects stall.

Hoo-boy, ain't that the truth. Mine's sitting, just waiting for vocals. Nobody I can get can make it sound anywhere decent.

I've enlisted a local musician / trainer to take a listen and see if she can make something happen. Hopefully she'll respond this week, so I can put this to bed.

Can I take a listen pjk? My voice is good in certain situations and I'd be willing to at least take a stab.

Also, I want in on this... I just think of a song and do it in a different style right?

Bleak picked the songs, and solicted everyone's by-in (who would partake).

Then he picked the list of styles, and did a random type picker routine.

This way you certainly didn't get one that you actually wanted (most likely).

As you can see in the first thread, there is some real head-scratching going on.

I think the real benefit is in the challenge though, so it's all good.

I can put up an MP3 on my site tonight. Email me (see profile) and I'll send you a link. I'm not quite ready to post it on the site here yet =/.

True . There are ways to get around the pain...

The 'trick' is to not take it too seriously, and accept your limitations in a graceful manor . I would've liked some horns in Smooth, but I don't see the need to go crazy over what is intended to be a spontaniously-fun project between friends .

That said, Achilles and Perseus comes to mind . heh Make that song your *****... not the other way around . ; p

Well damn, I dig that song quite a bit, mostly the style so it's too bad I have to change it :)

I assume you meant Latin style as www.latan.org/ didn't seem right to me.

This is definitely going to be a challenge as I am unsure of how to do a latin style (after checking google there is actually much to choose from though, far from a single style).

Ya know Bleak, after looking at the other songs people got (elvis, GnR, Santana) I'm thinking you don't like me much :)

Confirmed!

Well, bad news on the musical challenge participation by Tadpui. The wife and I made the decision to paint our living room before our New Year's party, so we're getting started right away. My entry will have to gather some dust in the coming weeks before I'll have time to get back to it.

If I had used my time properly, I'd already be done...sorry fellas!

Tripps, that one will be fun. I remember listening to that as a kid for petes sake.

And maybe Hue is right. I might be taking it far to seriously. It just seems to sound just like the original every time I try to get a grunge sound. Even the dropped guitar tuning didn't really make it at all different.

I'm gonna have to dig a little deeper in my well after a bit more cleaning and re arranging in here.

Done!! I don't know how, but I'm pretty happy.

Really, I gotta redo a guitar that was a tad noisy, hot mic for sure as it even made my acoustic squeal. I also want to sing it again once I memorize the vocals, it is just too hard to sing well while reading.

Anyway, here you are. Some Dixiebelles latin style.

Just FYI, my neighbor played the drums and bongo.

Hey, thanks guys. I was up till 2am and didn't even realize it. Spent about 5 hours total and yes it was one of the funnest two man sessions ever. Actually, my last session this fun was writing that damn rap song "8411". I will link that again actually, just cause I still laugh when I hear it.www.cpttripps.com/wma/8411.mp3 8411

Anyway, we used a sippy cup with oatmeal in it as a shaker. Tried some different micing to get that drum sound just right and everything happened to work well.

My strategy:

1. Figured root notes of bass line and also the jangly piano melody.
2. Looked up some latin scales and converted the bassline to match the samba beat from my neighbor.
3. Tried different chords to find the most latin sounding strummy upstrokes. (This was hard as this song's chord progression is far from latin)
4. Layer layer layer! Once the rythm section was in place adding bongo, more guitars, and extras was really quite easy.
5. Struggle with singing.... Only part I'm not too happy about. I think it will be much smoother once I memorize the lyrics.

After some proper listening...

... I like your version much more than the original, Cap'n . It also has a genuine quirkyness to it because of the lyrics having that latin feel, and being so 'un-latin'... the "Down at papa Joes..." part gets me every time ! = o
I'll bet you guys were having a real hard time not feeling stoked as it came together... I love that feeling ! 2am comes up pretty quick when the material is THAT fun . Big thumbs up, both to you and nieghbor-drummer-guy !

Now I'm off to try to get this way too catchy song out of my head, as it has a knack of creeping into my awkward mind via situational-conduits .

Cheers from the walruses .

Tripps, that was spiffy! It even had a certain retro medium-fi appeal that worked well for the tune.

So I didn't realize all the songs were in your profiles too.

I just listened to them all and wow. Straight up awesome! They were quite challenging and everybody managed to shine.

Herb, that was very... atmospheric is the best word I can think of. Perfect music for it and I loved the turning of paper towards the end. (edit: Mesmerizing, that's what it is.)

And Hue, foxtrot Santana, very nice. Vocal effect is perfect and reminds me of Waits a bit!

Beer, your challenge was tough, and you came through all smooth like. I personally, would have been scared to death of your task :)

I'm out of the game for a while. I managed to tweak my spine a week or two ago. According to the chiropractor (my first time ever to chiropractors - they are scary people) my spine is all over the place, and it was only a matter of time before this happened. I'm wearing a wedge in my shoe to correct a 9mm difference in height of my hips, and being cracked three times a week just to keep the pain tolerable.

I'm sure hefting a bass all those years wasn't really helping...
Anyway, I can walk again. However, I'm not in a position to get into my studio for any length of time.

I've been enjoying everyone else's though.

Chiropractors, mmmm-yes... quite . I guess they're better than addiction/withdrawl to pain meds, eh ? The bass thing prolly didn't 'help', but hey, that's all part of it, isn't it ?... the whole 'suffering for art' thing ? We musicians must be complete masochists on one level or another, when you consider some of the lengths we'll go to to get the job done . Always able to justify pushing oneself just a bit too much for this or that... for a recording, for a show, or a load-in/out . And for what ? BAH ! : p

Feel better, and heal quickly TC ! Happy listening, for the while .

chiropractor's are quacks.

I have had loads of back issues over the course of my entire life, none of them have ever done anything to help it. The only thing that has ever helped is just good old fashioned exercise and stretching. Look into Matt Furey's Combat Conditioning...some of the best stuff I have ever done.

So guys I know this is not over, but it was so fun it got me to thinking.

The only thing with this challenge is that it was time consuming (I spent 5 hours, that's alot of time for a working man). So I have an idea for another fun activity, one that takes minimal time for the most part but I tend to make it sound confusing. Here is the big picture, help me toss some ideas around.

1 - Get a group of people, I think 5-10 would be cool.

2 - Designate one the Mixer. In charge of final product.

3 - Mixer picks a tempo and a key and creates a loop using the instrument of his choice. He makes it 16, 32, whatever beats long and passes it to the Guy #2 who is next in the list.

4 - Guy #2 creates the same length/tempo/key loop using whatever instrument he wants and sends it on to the next in line, Guy#3!

This is the fun part...

5 - Guy#3 never hears the first loop, he will base his loop off only the previous persons work. The mixer only hears his first loop and has no idea what is coming in the end. If not many people want in we may have to go through the list a couple times.

6 - Once we have a decent amount of loop material, it must be arranged into something glorious.

So... that is roughly it. It seems confusing, but really we would be writing a few seconds of music and e-mailing it to someone.

Some ideas..
It might also be cool if everyone was the mixer, we just share all files at the end and see how many different versions we come up with, using an "all loops not required" type of thing. Or maybe even designate people an instrument so we don't end up with 16 guitar parts ;) Just thoughts.

Anyway, sorry for the novel but let me know if any of you might be interested. Just need to hash out the details. It may be asking for chaos and punishment, but I can't help it.

Tripps, in 2001 I joined up with a web based jam partnership known as misterbuster and that is exactly how we all worked. Someone would toss up a loop and then others would just grab it and keep adding to it. There were no rules as to what had to go where and how and why. You just tossed stuff into the mix and it became an unruly monster at times. It would however yield many different mixes of the same track. All sounding very different from someone else's interpretation of the same song.

Sometimes it would turn out very industrial sounding. But always electronic. Not a sound on this earth, and elsewhere was off limits when it came to adding to the mixes. It became a very creative process much like you describe. Although there were real instruments used in that project most were mutated, but some were left as is for the sake of driving someone nuts.

Anyway, sounds like fun for the next adventure. I'm sure there would be lots of takers, including me. Loops is what I do best.

I like doing bass guitar loops with odd timings in a certain tempo. Then I record my neighbor drumming but don't let him hear the bass (only tempo) and it produces some fun results.

tripps your odd time but specific tempo got me thinking....there's a Korn song on their debut album that has an odd time, but i'm guessing is this very same tempo you speak of...i'm a bass player and when you said that, that was the first song/groove that poped into my head....i can give you the title if ya like, but can't dig it up at the moment.

I just happened to have dug up an old piece of history from my early days of sequencing. When I get a few moments to make it presentable I'll post it for your enjoyment, or something like that.

It was as you stated created initially with an odd time signature. Instrument parts were done to varied versions of said odd timing. Then that odd drum part was removed and replaced with a straight up kind of groove thing. And man did it end up sounding odd, but cool at the same time. It ended up with a working title of Spazz. When you get to here it you will understand why.

And ya, I think once we have all finished on this little project then we can start on another. Or maybe around the first of the year, which ever comes first.

I've had that too many times to count. I'm with ya, brother.

My back is loosening up enough to give me some time out there before the pain takes over...I've managed a mix on something I recorded a while back (will post soon), but haven't been able to track anything yet.

Of course, I never get to track much anyway:

* Turn on PC/DAW
* Set up inputs
* Tune guitar
* Get a good tone
* Tune again
* Run through to get feel
* Recheck tuning
* Press record...........

DOOR OPENS.............
"Ian/Dad can you (insert whatever here)?" Sez 'er indoors/son/daughter.

* Press stop and glare....

Except for the vocal takes where someone bangs on the wall to let me know I'm needed.

Argh.

I know. Not this thread.....

Seconded...

Maybe I can finally get around to recording that bass track tonight. The wife recently went out on a bender with some friends she hadn't seen in a long time. They stayed out whooping until 6am, if that does not get me a "free pass" for some studio time I don't know what does.

I'll post the original rough track we recorded just for kicks tomorrow. Then yes, its time to lay this one to rest and start that add a bit and go colab we talked about earlier.

OK, this is not in the genre I was assigned so it isn't going to be my submission. This was done shortly before this thing started. Ironically I drew the song and not the genre this is in. Its a bit long winded and is actually a remix for a friend who's covers were being used by some DJ's on the east coast for awhile. She asked if I would help her out and being the nice guy I am I could not say no. But as it is the correct song I thought I would toss it up as an example of how far away from an original you can go. The grunge version just never came to fruition as there was not much free time for me to finish it.

But here is the other cover and it is pretty long.

Not sure, I think we are gonna do a collab (add onto it) type deal. But I really did enjoy this challenge. I think Bleak should start round two of it alongside the collab.

Uber spiffy on the G & R there, Noize. You never cease to deliver.

Thanx guys. Her voice is killer on that, so soft compared to the gonzo G n R version. I may still shoot up the lousy punkish version just for a laugh though. And I do mean laugh. There are a good deal of mistakes as it was just a live run through with the tape rolling.

Now that is...

Well I don't actually know what it is. But it once again proves the versatility of Duct Tape.

I've been inclined to finish my song, but a unplanned trip to detroit, and resulting nasty cold has set me back. As soon as I get this cold out from over top of me, I'm gonna finish mine, regardless of the results =).

Man, I tried so many times to do vocals for that. Haaarrrrrrddddd... Just not my vocal style I reckon :(

ah, i was gonna ask about that, and then never actually typed it out. I figured if you were gonna do it, you'll do it. No need for me to prod.

Everyone I put this too has said the same thing. They just can't get their head around the vocal style to make this work.

I'm just gonna wing it myself, and let it be what it is. Right after this cold, that is. My throat is toast!

I hate to leave a project hanging out in space, even if it is a goof project.

C'mon guys... 4 out of 11 done ?!?

Where have those creative and tallented peeps gone that couldn't keep themselves from taking on this 'challenge' offered up by our brother Bleak ?

Looking at some of the other challenges I think they sound fun. Reggae in the ghetto!!

PJK, I think I know why it's so hard singing to your tune, it needs a real guitar as that upstroke is the heart and soul of ska for me (seconded by horns).

there is one there, but it's kinda buried by the horns.

I'm certainly open to ideas. I can pull the horns down, and beef the git, and I'll see how that sounds.

Actually, my cold is over, but i've been busy with a real side job lately.

I think tomorrow, i'll give this a whack again.

If this competetion was about finding excuses to not complete my entry, then I'd definitely be in the running. Its stagnated, forgotten, buried, gathering dust. I kind of lost my steam. I've even got most of it done...just need to figure out how to do the vocals. It just came out really dry and stale, and after listening to BeerHunter's entry I realized how stiff and non-fun mine was sounding.

*ahem* Bummer deal Tad, it should be 100% fun and completely silly. Can I hear what you have? I know I tried to help pjk and fell flat but this one sounds really too good to let die.
