Only my second digital recording (after decades of tape). Written by Tommy Boyce & Steve Venet, c. 1966.
Recorded by The Monkees on their debut album.
I used the Alesis Multimix 8 into a crummy old computer with Audacity as the recording medium. I faked the bass drum with a mallet on the floor tom (I didn't want to drag the whole drumset into my bedroom). Otherwise a pretty straightforward recording, 5 guitars, bass, snare and hi-hat with floor tom, two vocals (the weakest part of the song), a bit of electric guitar, harpsichord and electric piano for flavoring.
Turned out pretty good for an old duffer. :)

Came out pretty good. Especially using Audacity. I use it for converting my LP's to mp3's. Never tried to multitrack with it. I use Mackie's Tracktion 3 which is very easy to use and powerful. Good job

Thanks. I'm just waiting to get the email from Soundclick so I can hear yours. Actually I saw the Dwight Frye cover and I'm very curious to hear that as well....I love the song.

Nice McMerkin. And interesting take with that floor tom as a kick drum. And that odd little tone in there once in awhile is pretty well set for this. The vocals are not bad at all, so don't get down on that. They sit nicely in there and work just fine. Liked the guitars they sounded nice and think. I liked your version a good deal. I'm downloading it into one of my HRC playlists for sure.

Very Nice! I'm a big Monkees fan, and I think you've done this song proud.

The performance is great, the sound is great. I love what you've done. And I agree with Noize: the vocals aren't bad at all. You're just used to hearing it Mickey Dolenz singing an octave higher!

I guess I did it in the key of A where the record was in the key of G. No real reason, probably because I found a D easier to play than an F. :)

Thanks for the kind words, all. It is one of my better recordings, for sure. I'm loving the ability to mutli on software without the generational sound loss or noise or saturation.

I do miss playing with tape decks, but....the results are hard to argue with.
