Hello All. I am new to Sonar 6 and having problems right off the bat. I would like to know how to start a new project, load a midi drum kit, and have the kit show up in "piano roll" where I can program it on the grid. I have followed thru some of the tutorials and they didn't seem to help at all. I know the midi is working because I can play pre-written midi files from some of the tutorials. But, as I wrote I don't seem to be able to load a drum kit and get a sound from it. Please help!!!

What drum synth are you trying to use? Most will set up their own drum names in the piano role as soon as you load them through the synth rack view.

Let me know which drum synth you are trying to use and I can help you through the rest of the set up.

I am surprised that the tutorials didn't get you going. Cakewalk has the most complete tutorials in their manuals of any software out there. And the tutorials in the help files section are even better.

diggitydogg, check out the vids on YouTube. Just do a search for Sonar 6 and you'll turn up quite a few helpful tutorials.

Also, if you go to www.cakewalk.com they have tons of tutorials there and links to even more that can help you along.

I'm going to assume you're using session drummer in this instance, since Sonar 6 comes with it.

1- Go to insert- soft synths- session drummer 2

2- in the dialog box that appears, tick 'synth property page' and 'synth rack view'

3- assign your kit program by clicking the program field. Once you've got the kit you like, cue up your 'piano roll' view.

From here, if all your in/out settings are correct for your system, you should hear drums on the keys; but not all of them. They only play on a select group of them, so drag your cursor up and down the piano roll with your mouse clicked down to find the select keys. If you cant hear any of them, then your settings are screwy and thats a whole other question.

I suggest doing tutorials 8 and 9. They explain this all in detail. If you have anymore problems, e-mail me and I'll give ya my number and I'll talk ya through it. I know how the tutorials are a little off-putting, I just learned this program myself, and though it seems a little hard at first, it's easy as pie.

Take the other guys advice too and look on youtube for the videos. Here's a link:

there's over 300 videos, most of which answer alot of questions. But once you understand the drums, you'll understand everything else. GL and welcome to HRC!

Keith, you posted the link to the search query. You need to post the link to the actual video page or the video itself. The search string wont bring up anything. I tried to redo it but to no avail.

OK, I got the page with the link direct out of my email. Not sure why it doesn't just show up here as a standard link.

But no, it isn't you.
