I want to know the best way to record a guitar and vocals directly to garageband or audacity the cheapest way.

Any help is appreciated.

I remember seeing once a guitar cable, I think made by Griffin used for Garageband.

Is it any good?

Which Mac do you have? The Macbooks have a line in, which is pretty easy to work with...

Ok, I have to say it: which do you want? the best way, or the cheapest way?

Ha, couldn't help it.

Is your guitar an acoustic? or electric?

If it's acoustic, then are you using a mic to record it? or is there a plug-in pickup in the acoustic?

For super cheap, I'd guess that using one of those USB mic combo things, for both guitar and vocals, but maybe not at the same time.

Record the guitar into the mic, then overdub the vocals after, into the mic onto a new track in software.

Here's a great looking solution for the 1 at a time garage bander. It even says so in the write up:

Here's a cheaper option but without the desktop stand, cable, etc.

To answer your questions:

1. I have a MacBook and a Mac.
2. Best way, but not too expensive.
3. Electracoustic, and an electric.

I want to know if theres a way to connect my guitar directly to Garageband.

And also if there is, if i can record guitar and vocals on garageband at the same time using a mic and the direct connection.

why not try one of those USB externals like an m-audio fast track or what not. I use garageband on my macbook pro and i use the alesis multimix 12 firewire... you can pick up one of the interfaces on ebay pretty cheap.

does it require some set up for grageband? or do you just hook up the firewire and go?

and can it record on multiple tracks at once?

Well I am not a GB user but I would assume they are pretty much the same as most. Simply get your audio interface set up and then in GB you will need to do the initial set up in the preferences section and set up the audio drivers for input and output. It should be pretty straight forward.

It's even easier than that in GarageBand. When you create a new track, you just select the audio source for the track.

In my case I use a Behringer FCA202:

and a small Behringer mixer similar to this:
www.zzounds.com...em--BEHXENTX502

This setup allows me to record one or two tracks at a time.

GarageBand itself allows up to 8 tracks of recording at a time, assuming your audio interface supports that many tracks.

I'm interested in the Behringer XENYX 502 Mixer.

With that can I connect my guitar and mic and record two tracks into garageband. Is it connected to the computer with firewire?

That is just a mixer, not an audio interface. You'd still need something to go from the mixer into the computer.

And exactly how are you going to connect the guitar? If it is an electro acoustic, then yes you can plug it into a channel of the mixer. But if it is an electric you either have to mic an amp or have something like a POD or the like to record direct. You can't just plug it into the mixer as it will not get a very good or loud signal.
