Does anyone have any recommendations for upgrading to a mic preamp that would be a step up from what the 1814 has? I record instrumental fingerstyleguitar using matched Rode Nt5 mics. Don't want to just spend more $ for the sake of spending but would like to upgrade my front end. Trying to stay around the $500 range. I was looking at ART's MPA gold, but don't know much about it.

Oct 29, 2007 03:56 pm Hey Brad, I have the 1814 and some different preamps. I have the ART MPA Digital. It's a nice preamp, but it sounds even better with different tubes in it. I replaced the tubes with a pair of Mullard tubes and it opened the sound up nicely. It's pretty warm too. I use a RODE NT4, which basically a fixed pair of NT5s. I think you'd be happy with it. It's a considerable step up over the onboard pres. I actually just shipped my 1814 to Black Lion Audio to get their tweakhead mod ($400). They upgrade the pres to rival ones that cost like double the price we paid for our 1814s so I'm excited for that. They also improve the conversion in and out of the unit. They say it's up there with the Apogee converters. The clock and power supply is swapped out too. But back to preamps, I also have the Trident S20 dual channel preamp which is my favorite preamp that I have. I paid $600 for that. But check out Black Lion Audio. They're great a great bunch of guys, and offer a lot.
