VSTi in Sonar 6 PE?

First time caller, long time listener...

First off, I'm a Newbie to the site, but I've come here over the years for advice or research and I love it. There isn't a question out there someone on here cant answer.
So here's my question:

I've been using Acid Pro 5 for quite some time, but cant stand the "loop" based pantheon of limitations, so I switched to Sonar 6 PE, but I'm questioning my choice.

Is it possible to use VSTi's as soft synths in Sonar, am I simply overlooking the option? I got an AMAZING piano VST called TruePianos (www.truepianos.com) and I'm not sure if it can be used as a soft synth in Sonar, or in Sonar at all for that matter. Should I spring $ for Cubase or a midi controler, or is there hope?

Cheers :)

Yes you can, it's in the insert menu :-)

Easy as that, it self-creates a midi and audio track assigned to that synth.

Thanks for the quick response dB; I actually had to specify my plug-ins from my programfiles/VSTplugins so it would recognize them during import. (shrug) I'm retarded, what can I say.

Crummy thing now though, is that my sucky SigmaTel sound card wont accept midi playback from sonar, so I cant hear anything from from midi tracks, and ASIO4ALL isn't helping it. (I don't know ANYTHING about ASIO; what it is or what it does) I'm a hardware retard as well, lol.

If you have any ideas on that, it'd be awesome. Thanks again.

Oh, yeah, you do have to profile all your VST's, that's right, I forgot to mention that, my bad.

Your sound card should work for it just the same, you are not listening to your "midi track" you are listening to the audio track. MIDI is just digital info (lots of ones and zeros, binary data), the softsynths job is to take that MIDI data and turn it in to audible sound using the sound sample(s) you tell it to use and ship the sound out of the audio track...

ASIO is just another driver type, nothing more. www.homerecordingconnecti...story&id=81

Oepn the Synth Rack view and then open the synth (VSTi) or your choosing. If you have already imported midi tracks then uncheck the add midi track option for the synth you are opening. Now go to the mid track you wish to have send the midi data to the synth and in its output section choose the synth you just opened as its destination. You should be good to go from there.

Any other questions simply ask. Sonar is my longtime DAW and there are several other here who know it pretty well also.

How can I monitor midi tracks as I'm making them with a soft synth in sonar? I've been able to import them following your steps Noize, but I cannot hear them while creating a new one... I feel like a *******, lol. I've never had this much trouble learning a DAW.

Maybe I'm just getting slower with age... then again, if wine gets better with time then I should as well; I've got more brains then a grape, haven't I?

It's confirmed: that was an, "I'm an idiot" moment. I understand now. I guess I'm just too used to having everything hands on, not a couple clicks away.

most vst's ya download are a simple ".dll" file....just cut and paste it into your "vst" folder in cakewalk (under program files)....the next time you open Sonar, it'll recognize the new plug.

OK so you got it running now while playing or do you still need to figure that one out?

If not, you need to assign the synths audio track output to your sound card so you can hear it.

And no idiots around here. We all spent time learning this stuff. And I know I for one made lots of little and big mistakes along the way.

I got it all figured out. WYD, I just added my VST folder onto the search list so Sonar loads the VSTs from it on start up because I still use them with other programs and dont want to re-route them or have the stock Sonar VSTs show. I got it all figured out. Thanks guys :)

hi guys,
I'm new to the software, and i had follow the link because of the question Keith did ask.

I downloaded the gsnap plugin so i can work with it in sonar 7, but the plugin needs to be feed by midi so the auto tune can be done.

i tried to insert a midi track with an output looking at Gsnap, but it was unsuccessfull, be cause i can't treat the Gsnap plugin as an vst synth.

Please help!!!

P.S. i know that my version comes with v-vocals, but i love the effect of the free gsnap plugin. (sometimes the better is the cheaper).

hey man, i think your trying to go insert - soft synth...

i dont have gsnap, but after reading a brief discription...

if your adding this to vocals...

look towards the vocal track and theres a box that says "none" just to the right of the "fx" box... right click - audio fx - gsnap

if g snap doesnt show up, its gota be in your vst folder! (then restart sonar if it was open when you put the gnsap .dll file(s) in your vst folder (by default prog files- cakewalk-vstplugins

nvm i think i get what your asking now one sec let me give it a try

well i imported a song with gsnap and the song has been "auto tuned" and im not using midi... unless you want to use midi
