I know I've done my fair share of ragging on this toob preamp, but $30 is a great price for it even if you just want to use it as a bass DI (which is the one job it excels at). Just figured I'd give a heads-up in case anybody wants to jump in on a super-cheap price.

Cheaper bass "DI" than that even:

No toobs though.

Ha ha, homemadehitshow just posted an audio review (today) of these - you can actually hear the difference :)

I just bought one for $22 (scratch and dent).

The Studio model adds a VU meter, which is marginally useful over the existing LED clip indicator.

I don't care for it much as a mic preamp because it tends to suck the highs out of everything I send through it. Vocals, guitars, you name it, they all lose their sparkle. But bass sounds great through it. So mine has been relegated to bass DI duties.

But for $30? I'd recommend it over anything else you can get for $30.

Man I loved the audio demo at homemade hits.com , if it already exist I've missed it, but has anyone thought of a section that might have audio demos of different equipment, comparisons and uses in this forum.

I think it comes down to how, when and where it's used (I have the Behringer version). Bass is great, but sometimes it adds just a little 'something or other' to guitars and vocals. Not for use every time, but in its place 'tis a marvelous thing.

ahh, that was my first real dedicated preamp....but i sold it to a friend who was miking things much more than i....so i don't really remember much about the sound....on the note of 'the right pre for the right sound'....i can't tell you how embarrassed i was when i insisted on using a Groove Tube Brick as a bass DI after a few takes, we tried the stock mackie pres in the board and WOW the low end was there!.....i was so sure of myself when i made the bass player use it, serves me right for assuming such a thing....

keep the objectivity alive!
