ok many questions so little time. i have recently purchased a computer and i want to start my studio. im hoping somebody could tell me the equipment i need to make i very good sounding demo or a polished recording. i dont have much experience but i plan on making this a full time hobbie and am devoted to doing whatever it takes to get it done right. right now i just plan on doing songs with an acoustic guitar and vocals but eventually plan on adding a drum machine and so on and so on. i know i need a multitrack recorder and speakers and what not but could you tell me everything i need and give some good examples. i only plan on spending $2000 to start and work my way up from there. i thank you for your time and appreciate the help.

hey.. im in the same boat as you man. but im trying to open up for biz for a little side money to help get me away from suburbia... but enough of my rambling. If you plan on using your computer for a recording/storage unit for your music you should be sure to invest in a speedy processor and alot of ram. this allowes the plug ins to act up to speed and the software to run smooth and alot of that other techy mumbo. i hear ddr is the best for recording as apposed to rd ram in which case latency occurs (i might have heard that here on a post somewhere or at a seminar or something, but im sure it was a very reliable source). anyway...sound card, sorfware .do your homework. make sure the units you buy are compatable with what you wish to do with your recordings. aside from that i just use some mics and a mixer with some strong pre amps and your ready to fly. its a self learning experience man.. it gets wild, and frustrating at times, but for each problem a solution and so on. but yeah hope i helped.

For starters, are you sure you want t record on a multitracker, or have you considered using your PC? Not to start the analog vs. digital debate, just tossing it out there as a cost effective alternative.

Really tho you need a couple things, a recording medium (either digital or analog, a couple good mics, a decent mic preamp, or mixers with pre's) and a compressor/limiter/gate unit usually comes in handy. That is bare bones needs...it only goes up from there...

i think deemetal means multitrack recording software. i think you nailed it with mics + mixer + compressor dB. And indeed a good pair of headphones and a nice soundcard (not sound blaster) will make for a great start.

$2000 should get you everything you need to get started. you might consider installing a second 7200 RPM harddrive just for audio. upgrade your RAM to at least 256 Megs if you havn't already. The more RAM the better (i have 384 and that's still not enough for what i want to do). concider a multitrack app like Sonar, Nuendo, Acid, Cool Edit, Cubase, etc. And maybe concider a wave editor/mastering app like WaveLab or Sound Forge.

and that's about it. i really recommend you hang around, read the articles and threads and ask questions before you start purchasing stuff. Welcome to the fun stuff!
