Static in my M-Audio Project Mix???

I just purchased and M-Audio Project Mix I/O about a month ago. I’ve been happy with it so far until tonight. I was recording and all of the sudden I heard static in Channel 5. I thought I had a bad cable so I unplugged everything in channel 5 and the "SIGNAL" light is still flickering. When I turn up the gain the "SIGNAL" light stays on and eventually the "CLIP" light flickers and stays on. There's nothing plugged into Channel 5. I unplugged everything from the board except the monitors, firewire cable, and the power cable and the static is still there. How am I getting a signal if there’s nothing plugged into Channel 5?

Are you hearing the static even if the recording application isn't running?

If so it sounds like a hardware issue since nothing is plugged into the unit and your still getting the static.

does it get worse or seem to be aggravated if you move a slider up or down?

M-Audio's website said all the firmware and drivers were up to date. I tried doing that first.

The "static" does get louder as I increase the gain on the pre-amp but it does nothing when I move the slider.

Is it possible that I've fried a pre-amp? How would I check for that?

I recorded silence for 30 seconds and moved the gain and all the faders.

The static increased to the point of clipping with the gain at 50%. This only happens on Channel 5 although I have 8 seperate channels recording.

Thanks for your help Paul.

It does indeed sound as though you may have fried a pre amp circuit. You can however make a try at un installig and re installing the drives, but I honestly don't think that is the problem. But stranger things have happened.
