i have an 11ft by 14ft room, wood flooring...i came up with an idea of building a circular box with a top and bottom and cutting out 1/3 of the wood for mic access and vocal access...inside this circular box i have heavily padded so that the sound thats inside is deadened...does anybody have a better idea on how to deaden the sound?...
the nbox i have made literally sits around the microphone 2/3's of the way and the 1/3 gap is where you stand and project vocals through...i thought this might be the best way to save costs before my studio is completely finished...what do you think?

Sep 28, 2007 04:51 pm yeah i know i dont wanna completely deaden it, thats why i left like 1/3 of it still open so that a little bit of reverb or natural noise can get in still...
when i finally test it i will drop a track or two to let you guys know ;)

If u have a nice big room with wood flooring, i say just stand in the middle of the room with ur mic slightly higher than ur mouth (maybe just above ur head) upside down and then put up a large blanket about a foot behind u. Everything getting to ur mic should be the "good" reverb coz in my experiences its mainly the reflections from the back that will cause a problem, everything is "room". Maybe u might need to do that infront of u to, but defenitly keep the sides. I dont konw if ur building the box or soundproofing, but if that not an issue try it this way, i do it this way and it sounds much more natural.

Sep 29, 2007 06:31 pm thanks, ill try that out, i think when im recording hip hop vocals i kinda want as less reverb as possible to be honest, but with singing i obviously want that natural feel so im kind of stuck in a catch 22 situation lol...but thanks for the pointers.

For hip hop vocals, ive never tried, but seen alot of folx out here just hooking up a dyanmic like a SM57 or 58, cranking up their preamps and just going for it. I think it embodies that "spittin on the mic" feel. If that happens, i think the room will count less in the equation so yeah, the same set up should work.
