Wireless Microphone Modification Idea

I have a Audio Technica 600 Series Freeway wireless handheld. It's not a bad mic, but it tends to be hard to control with feedback and seems a tad bit harsh in the upper register.

My idea is, and let me know what you all think.. Can I take the microphone unit out of an SM58 and replace the one in the 600?

It 'looks' relatively simple, and I'd be creating a wireless 58 essentially.

What problems do you foresee?

If you can do it without destroying any of the connections (so you can switch back if necessary), and the SM58 capsule will fit in the 600, I say go for it; nothing to lose. However, if the capsule in the 600 is of the electret condenser variety, it's a no-go. A dynamic capsule won't work in there.

If you try this, be sure to get the polarity right.

Herb,

How would I know if the capsule in there is a 'electret'.

One way would be to get a voltmeter, turn on the mic, and measure to see if there is a voltage across the terminals of the capsule (should be small, less than 6 volts). If there's a voltage there, you have an electret. Let me know how this turns out.

Will do. It's going to be pretty boss if it actually works.

Yes...I said boss. :)
