So, as I'm heading out the house at about noon today to go to work, i stop to pick up the mail. I notice an envelope from BMI. I'm signed up with BMI, but have never received anything from them before. So, I figure it's probably a credit card app or something. I almost toss it without opening it. But curiosisty got the best of me, and lo and behold, there's a check and a statement in there. Apparently some college station(s) out there has been playing one of the songs off my last CD 282 times and I got a royalty check of $20 and some change. What the hell? That was about the last thing I expected. But I'll take it. I know $20 ain't that much, but it's still pretty cool!

Congrats! $20 is more than you had before you opened the envelope :)

coolo, that is great. Kind of cool getting royalty checks when you don't expect them. I still get check now and then from old stuff. But they are few and far between these days.

hmmm did you actually 'publish' your work through BMI to begin with? or are they 'luring' you in?

if indeed you went through the publishing process, then i'd say it's legit...but if you gave them your e-mail addy and nothing else, i'd say they're baiting you...but i must admit BMI (and ASCAP for that matter) aren't the type to fish like that.

i say, if you did publish it, then it's legit...but if you didn't, then they're fishing.

No, I actually did officially sign up with BMI some time ago. I just didn't expect to be collecting anything. I'm debating if I should frame it, or say forget it and just go cash it. I don't know yet.

ps. I love how wyd goes back and re-reads his threads and then comments on them. Less work for me.

coolo, that's pretty cool. One of the IT guys at a former job spent some time with a local band that did quite well (name escapes me) and every now and then, just for yucks, he'd bring in checks to show us for like 25 cents and stuff from royalties from that band...

Kinda funny, the paper is worth more than it's actually made out for...

$20 tho, that's nice...like an old friend used to say:

Coolo,

Way to go...I can relate. About a week ago I got my first payment from iTunes for my Gettysburg CD. $25.96. It went directly into my PayPal account, so I can't frame it. (Otherwise, that's what I would do!)

You and me, we're big time.

I'm thinkin' about maybe puttin' $25.96 down on a nice house for my mom. Or maybe another Cadillac for the in-laws. I can't decide.

Way to go! Here's to many more checks!
