I hate recruiters

The last two weeks I have dealt with a couple recruiters that explain why they are the bane of every IT guy's existence.

The first one tells me about a good gig via email the day after surgery, I am all doped up (and told him the condition I was in) expressed interest, he set up an interview...the week pressed on I weas feeling horrible, told him so and about 24 hours before the interview I was kinda coming to my senses, thought about it and realized I didn't want to job. Now, I understand his frustration with a short notice bow out...but he gave me an email tongue lashing about being unprofessional and how I will never work with him again, and how this can ruin my reputation in the "small IT circles" of our area and ****. I wrote back and said fine, **** ya then, and proceeded to remind him he's only a recruiter and he should likely get over himself...and wished him luck riding the coat tails of the skilled people.

Now today a lady writes and wants to see a resume and says she has a job...I write back and say that's fine, and explain to her that I am only interested in full time perm work and the locations I will work in. She saw that as rude and just gave me a lesson in how to present myself and said she didn't want to hear more about me since she doesn't want to represent someone so rude.

So rude as to actually have requirements about where he'll work? WTF is that?

Where do recruiters get off thinking they are so important...I mean the job are out there, it's not like they CREATE jobs, they worm their way in the middle and leech money off both sides of the deal...

Jeezuz.

Of course, I know a couple very cool recruiters and recruiting firms, but I have come to learn they are NOT the norm.

Good for you. Stick to your guns. They should be serving you, not themselves.

Oh, yeah, that second one also said "I can't believe you'd talk like that since I am trying to help you" or something like that...I replied "come on, you are helping you by placing me, don't sell it for something it's not, it's you job".

I mean, come on now, people...I personally find honest and direct to waste a lot less time on both sides...just tell it like it is...

I hate these people...

doesn't sound like she's helping you, if she wants to place you in a job that you hate the location.

ok when i was reading this thread, i was thinking in tearms of U.S military recruiters....but it seems that they are all the same (and i hate to generalize)...but their job is to recruit. plain and simple....the guy i know is a russian native (accent and all) recruiter for the navy....it's almost too funny hearin' him say (in a russian accent) "how would you like to be a part of the worlds greatest naval superpower"....it's like the poor guy went to an Amway convention!

i think it's funny he's not deployed, it's like we don't trust him, BUT we will let him bring in more ppl....and he's very much a salesman, that's his job, and that's what he does....but he comes into the bar in full naval garb (partly to get free drinks *he told me this* and partly to recruit). i've heard his pitches, and it sounds like a car salesmen to me.

I stopped working with them a long time ago. On both sides of the table. I won't use them to get a job, or to find an employee for me. I'm sure there is a good one out there, per statistic probibility if nothing else, but I don't have the time to dig that one up. Their like the receptionist in an all show-no-go company; Full of themselves and arrogant, stemming from being the bottom level gofer and trying to present themselves as impotant. I liken their function to a mine field; Something to be traversed without incuring damage. They have no other intrinsic value.

I had similar dealings with temp agencies a long time ago. They expect you to be all subservient to their needs. As you noted, they are riding the coat-tails of the talented people.

It's not like they don't stand to make serious money out of your hard work.
Telling them to f*** off was probably the best move.

Yeah, the down side is, often times big companies rely on them to do their hunting, which sucks. Recruiters have gotten me my last two jobs...

That said, I have two rules, the first one is my first line of defense that even my wife knows...if there is a message on the answering machine from somebody that barely speaks English, delete it, I won't even return the call...either it's a foreign call center, or, it's one of those firms that just look for as many people as possible to submit for a position.

The second is, if the first conversation with a recruiter does not involve the phrase "so, tell me, what do you want in your next move" I don't talk to them again.

dB, that gave me a much needed chuckle today. Thank you for that. :-)

On recruiters, yes there seem to be more vicious shark like ones then good ones these days. A recruiter from my past managed to lie his way into talking to me by stating he was an old close friend. Ray hands me the phone saying its one of my old buddies. So like a moron, I took the call. After 15 seconds of the idiot talking like we were really old chums I realized who and what he was. Stated I'm not interested and hung up after telling him lying to a child to get me on the phone was very low. He actually had the balls to call back and try and chew me out and give me that same kind of shpeel they gave dB about not working. I kind of laughed and simply stated I'd be glad to not get work from him and hung up again. The relentless freak called again about 20 minutes later. Didn't answer the phone that time.
