Beat Of The Week

So, I just had my birthday this past weekend. Got to celebrate with a CAL win and a Niners win (albeit ugly and a bit luck, but dammit a win is a win!).

Anyhow, I've decided to start posting a new beat up to my myspace page every Monday for the new year. First one is up starting today. It's called "beefy" if anyone wants to give it a listen. Some synthy stuff made on Reason.

I think that you'll find that doing exercises like this will greatly further your songwriting skills. Songwriting takes practice and this is a perfect way to practice. Good luck, and stick with it!

Cool that yer dad liked the other stuff though. Mine never even listened to anything I have ever done. My mum likes most of my stuff though, accept for the harder edged stuff.

Me, well I liked it. Lotsa movement to it, and interesting sounds.

On a side note, the boyz mother actually liked the CD. WE were playing it in the car with her along for the ride, and she was groovin with it. And actully stated she liked it. She freaked when she realized it was you. The boyz just chuckled at that one. But she was diggin it, so that was good.

Noize, that's wild that she was digging the music. It keeps the spirits up when you hear stuff like that.

Thanks for listening to the first beat of the week. very synthy, I know.

My dad likes to critique, but he's honest, says what he likes and what he doesn't. Can't really ask for anything more than an honest opinion. But we tend to disagree alot on what is good and what is not, which is somewhat expected since we come from very different places musical taste wise. He tends to not be into any of the instrumental stuff and be more into songs with vocals and lyrics. That's too bad that your dad never listened to your music, Noize. Oh well, if you ever need an extra ear, send some tunes my way!

Tadpui, thanks for the encouragement!

Interesting indeed. I liked the horn blasts and build ups, very FM synth stack sounding. What did you use for that if I might ask? The tuba thing was pretty cool as well as the echoed vox. I actually like this one better. Not that the first one is lacking mid you.

Hey thanks for listening noize. Just as a note, none of these are mixed properly, as I always wait until some vocals are layed on a beat before I start to mix it.

This is another beat done on reason. Horns are sounds that come with Reason (including the tuba, though I added an old bass soundfont under the tuba to give it some more umph) . The wierd sound driving the beat is an organ sound that also came with reason, and a delay added on to it. And the synth sound is a sound I concocted with the SubTractor soft synth in Reason. The vocals are just my audio tag that I put on my internet beats so people can't jack them....

I kind of thought there was something else going on with the tuba but wasn't sure.

Mixed proper or not they still sound cool.

Here's another cool one. I wasn't able to post up about #3, cuz I was in Omaha, and my laptop wouldn't let me login to HRC. Kinda wierd. Anyways, the 4th installment of the beat of the week series is up. I switched it up and used P5 on this one instead of Reason. Actually built the foundation of this one while on a plane on the company laptop. That was pretty cool.
Anyways, if you're bored, and looking to listen to something interesting, check out the myspace, it's the top song (gingerbread man). Feedback definitely appreciated.

I liked the synths you picked for #4 for sure. You leave lots of room for moving around in the beats. I like that a lot, nice and clean. But it still has plenty going on to retain interest in the beat itself.

Have you updatded P5 to 2.5 yet? There should be 2 free updates if you haven't updated yet. There was the 2.5 update and a patch shortly after that.

Thanks for listening again Noize. These beats are all made with the "intention" that "someone" will rap over them one day. So I try and leave some space, so as not to be too overbearing, and subtract completely from the vocals that may one day be there.

And yeah, I got the 2.5 updates. I still need to remember to go get the extra sample/dimension packs you were telling me about.

Another week, another beat. This one is driven by a string sample that I chopped and slowed down. The drums and the xylophone are my own additions (no pre made loops as usual). Also as usual, all listens are appreciated.

DUDE!!!!

That is splendid indeed. I love that string sampled bit it has kind of a cool brassy sound to it. Very old school like something off one of my old jazz records. The xylophone has your style line to it. And ya, I'm starting to hear a certain style coming out in some of your stuff. I can't put my finger on a way to describe it but there is something about some of your melody lines that seems to appear in many of your tunes. Thats a compliment by the way.

Back to the string sample thing. I gotta mention also that it is huge sounding. Very cool as it holds the whole thing together very well.

yeah, man, the mypsace compression is murking that track up big time. usually don't hear it much, but it's bad this time.

The string/horn sample is actually from a ballroom dancing cd i checked out of the library. I pitch shifted the sample down an octave. I was pretty generous with the release on the sample player, so it gives it a nice delay/reverb effect making it sound a little bigger.

Oh, and as usual, many thanks for taking the time to listen and comment.

You'd be surprised what I hear in that stuff sometimes. But no, it isn't one of those. Just something that has gone through my head a few times now when listening to the new disc and the old one. Funny how some of it got stuck in my head.

Anyway, if I get a bug I will call on ya to participate for sure.

Hey man, i appreciate the listen attempt. Your comment is odd to me though considering there is no bass instrument on the beat, unless you're talking about the kick drum sound. Anyways, the beat is not properly mixed so the kick is just a stock drum sample that i have in my collection (prolly an 808 type of sound that i grabbed from somewhere). But again, i definitely appreciate the listen.

Wow, not sure what is going on but when I click the link it is taking me to some freaking search portal page that has a pesky pop up that Firefox is blocking.

Anyway, I got in the long way around. Nicely done again. I liked the sharp sound string stab or pluck kinda thing going on. Nice bass line as well that follows along. Kind of fast steppin drum beat going on with that slow clap/snare combo over it. This one moves quickly though with some slower bits into it that come out nicely as well. I'm liking this one the whole mix on this as well.

oops, my bad on the link, it said mysace (minus the p) instead of myspace...

anyways, thanks for listening 4four. I may eventually put them all over on soundclick, but who knows when...

Noize, the plucky thing is a sample that i chopped and rearranged off of a philipino traditional folk music cd. As usual, the mix is rudimentary, so i'm surprised to hear that. I think the drums could definitely use some work in the mix. Thanks for checking it out.

I'll catch it tomorrow night.

And I liked the drum thing, I re read how I posted that and it sounded kinda snippy. So I retract that one and bluntly state I like the fast paced drum thing with the slower clap going on. :-)

And sometimes the rudimentary mixes are the ones that make the grade in my book. I know I for one have spent a couple of weeks re mixing things only to return to the first or second mix.

No no noize, no need to retract. I was just backing up my point about the mix being rudimentary. I personally would expect the drums to sound much better in a finished mix. I didn't take it as snippy at all.

Broken Windows is pretty cool. I love the tiny piano thing. Nice synth pad as well when it comes in. I like that it isn't constant, only appears here and there. Its got a nice wash to it. Again, nice and straight forward beat for sure. I like the minimalistic approach you have been using lately. Leaves lots of room for vox.

I'll agree on the fact a finished mix would sound more refined. But I am listening to these with the idea that they are a simple layout and can be modified and polished later. Besides, I like the beats as is too.

Um, ya.

Dude, I love the layers of stuff going on. Bizy in places, but not distracting if you know what I mean. Lotsa interesting stuff going on in there. Again, the beat is just cool for this one. The bass pad thing is really cool as well. Got a kind of low level filter thing going on. It sits well in the mix and again, doesn't distract from the main theme of the mix.

Its kind of funny that you say that. Usually Tuna will sit in here or if its loud enough he hears it in the game room. Then after a couple listens if we head off somewhere one of us will start humming the hooks out of your stuff that we were just listening to. I'm thinking that is a good sign if they stick in someones head, even for a little while. Some of them actually get stuck even while listening to the radio or watching TV for Tuna.

And yes, we end up laughing as well. Asking the question, how did that happen.

I'm guessing it is just good hooks that catch a bit of our minds and stay there for a bit.

Dude???? Do I hear guitar licks in there???? Pretty kool!!! You got some interesting samples going on in there though. I like the kind of orchestra stab that seems to be way back in the mix. But I gotta listen a bit louder tomorrow to be sure though. I like the vocal samples I am hearing as well.

Ya, in fact I kinda just thought about snapping some after I started dragging crap outa here. I should have done a before and after set. But you saw how bad it was piled up in here this summer.

But indeed, I'll be popping up some picks as I go. I think I'm going to dump that bigger rack finally as I doubt I will ever use that much space anymore. I don't really need that much outboard gear anymore and that rack was huge deep for a couple of older pieces I had that were in need of that space. Now I don't need it that deep anymore and can use the extra space in here.

Oh ya, and holy **** did I put way to much tack back on the Auralex. It was stuck reeeeeaaaaaal good! :-O

oh, and just a warning, but its a little overcompressed. I'll try and put up a newer/better version tomorrow.

It was real bad. And indeed all I could do was chuckle as well. It left lots of little purple specs of foam and glue all over. But I got tired of pulling the little specs off so I'll just hide it behind the bookcases for now and the bigger rack.

Ill check out the beat tomorrow probly. Got an early day so I'm gonna go try and crash soon.

Is the newer version up? It doesn't sound too over compressed in this version. but that could be the myspace player as well just dumbing it down some. Its got a nice thump on the kick and the snare snaps real nice.

Its gotta a funky jazz sorta feel to it which I'm diggin for sure.I like the synth that has a slow attack that comes in occasionally. Its got a cool kinda busy feel to it here and there. Lotsa stuff going on and its spread out nicely.

It kind of reminds me of some old Herbie Hanckock stuff when he got into the synth thing for awhile.

Yeah, this one is pretty busy sounding.

The old overcompressed version is still up. When I compressed, the drums punched through nicely, but some of the other elements (the bass esp.) got left in the background and it doesn't sound that good to me. But whatever, this is just a rough draft to show concept.

Thanks for listening Noize. Ha, you said "bigger rack" boing!

Oh ya, I am a busy liker as well. Some of my older stuff used to get so overcrowded it now makes me giggle. I think I was having a period of seeing how much I could cram into one space without it getting turned to sonic pudding.

And ya, the jazzy thing is what got me for sure.

Ok, so I have been slacking over the holidays (concentrating on mixing some songs instead of making new beats), but I'm back at it.

Here is a new Beat Of The Week. Number 12 in the series. Pretty upbeat. Bassline is inspired some of the Rick James I've been listening to lately. Enjoy.

That made my toes tap right off the bat. If tonyD were here I'm sure it'd make his butt wiggle.

I agree on the bass line being more spunky, it does bring a Rick James feel. I gotta ask cause I can't figure it out. What is that castanet sounding clicky every 8 beats? I listened in headphones to and couldn't catch it. But I did catch some cool little synth licks.

Another cool one for sure.

Noize, its funny that you ask about the castanet sounding thingy. Cuz as I put it in, I was thinking to myself, I really like the extra element this gives to the beat, but I bet 99% of the people who listen won't even notice it.

Its two different samples of snaps from a drum sample kit that I have. The first and third instance are the same, and the second one is a different sample that has also been pitch shifted up a bit to give some extra texture.

I had this one playing on repeat in my headphones at work for probably about 2 hours yesterday.

That is crispy and bright! I love the drum loop, its kickin major butt. Did you build that one up? I am hearing little guitar lick samples in there as well, like a jazz sounding guitar??

Lovin the way the brass moves from right to left with a tiny bit of delay, makes for a killer full sound. Sounds like other parts are doing it as well.

I was kinda missing a bass line until I listened a few times good n loud. Not missing it now, sounds good without a heavy bassline in it. But again, the drums are killer for sure on this one. I love that sound of the snare for sure, its huge.

I like your work, Coolo. As I've mentioned before, you don't go overboard with the low end and cluttering up the mix, which is refreshing in a piece of this genre.

Thanks. That page has been up there for over a year. I tend to forget it's there. I should add some more stuff to it. I have some really filthy creations that I'm a bit hesitant to publicize. Most of it is inside humor that only my friends and family would understand. Not that you guys aren't my friends, butcha know what I mean.

Hmmm, how did I miss all this banter??? Herb, I'm gonna go check that out in one quick moment!

So, I really like the drum sequencing you did on this. The fill at the end of the bar is great! Sounds very new jack swingish. The rapping is pretty funny though!

Noize, that last beat was the first thing I ever did with all samples. The drum is a break that I found on my harddrive... I don't remember where I got it from. The first 3 bars of the loop are just on repeat, and the 4 bar of the loop I chopped it up and rearranged it a bit. The horns are sampled from a movie soundtrack, and the guitar is sampled from a blues song.

And, here's another one!

14th Beat of the Week series of beats.

This one was done in P5. I like it. The mix is pretty poor though, for some reason, the bass and drums, are way low...hmmm. Annoying. Anyways it's called Atomic Seahorse and is in the usual spot.

Had a quiet listen tonight. It sounds like it is begging to be turned up though so I'll hold my tongue until I get to listen louder.

Anyway, sweet use of those samples for sure then. Your getting some killer sounds out of the sampling that is for sure.

Ha ha, Walt. Definitely needs more drums! Oh well, its just a scratch pad for now, so if it ever gets past this stage, it'll get the drums turned up.

Yeah Noize, I think I'm doing about 75% original tracks and 25% sample based tracks. As always, I appreciate the listens!

it's called New Beginnings. Sample based track. Kind of a bouncy vibe. Yee!

I'm late to the party for sure. Just trying to catch up from the last 3 weeks of bull taking all my time up.

I'll catch it tomorrow evening though as usual.

Sweet, I am luvin the gating effect you got for sure. Freakin bouncy is right. The way you chopped em up really adds to it. I do like the feel of this one for sure. And that jazz guitar riff thing sits nicely in there as well.

Thanks Noize. This was a beat contest where everyone used the same original song to make a sample based beat. I think I came in like 5th out of 22 or something like that. I like it anyway...
