Sounds specific to country?

I was listening to my usual French radio station tonight (NRJ est la meilleure station par radio!) and Timbaland - The Way I Are has a different female part? A french speaking artist sings instead of her and it honestly isn't as good, they didn't do the vocoder and stuff, not as polished.

That begs the question for me, how common is it for a song to be almost "covered" like that one is for foreign markets? I've seen releases of 2 languages and such, but I never knew they even had different artists do the different languages for the same song?

it's very common... because a lot of the times the artists buy the songs from writers and those contracts are non-exclusive.
