Leaving the Past Behind - new WIP

Hey all, here is a song that we are tossing about right now. I wrote this song about my daughter Chelsea's, high school graduation.

This song still needs a lot of work. Pretty much everything will be retracked. Even the lyrics are being changed to a different point of view.

This is also our first song using my new 12 string acoustic.

Anyways, I thought it would be cool to upload it now so you can hear how it progresses. I can already hear Chelsea's BGV's on here so I can't wait until she is able to add them. Probably sometime this weekend.

Nothing has be done to this as far as mixing and such so no need to comment on that but if you have a comment about the song in general, that would be cool.

Cheers,
Lonnie

I dig it, fully produced and all that would be awesome...I can surely hear some backup vox as well...that'll really add something...you should see if some of her classmates would join in...make it fun, sort of like "another brick in the wall" was with the kids choir...could be fun as heck.

I look forward to hearing the final track.

dB, that is a great idea (kids choir thing). With three daughters about the same age and a bunch of their friends it would certainly be do-able. Gotta hammer out this one quick. There is this one submission that we are going after with a Sept 5th deadline so we gotta get on it.

Dude, you may have just penned the anthem of the class of 2007...I can totally hear a choir on the chorus, doing bouncebacks with the leads during verses on occassion, heck, lots of options.

That was part of the inspiration when I wrote this. They played some cheesy song from about 10 years ago and I thought that it was about time to have something fresh. It is also the reason why it is a little lighter(folk/acoustic) than we have done before but we thought we can't get too carried away with the heavy guitars on this one.

The choir thing is a really good idea and I think we'll run with that. I really don't think I would need too many unique voices to make it work either. I might be able to pull this off with just my daughters. I could probably just double/tripple and pitch shift their vocals to make a full choir sound.

I gotta agree with dB on this as well. That would really add something to it and give it an anthem like feel.

Nice lyrics by the way. Nothing else I can add really. Just a very cool well written and great sounding tune. Cant wait to hear it as a final version.

I uploaded a new version with Chelsea's vocals tonight. Still needs work but the general feel of the song is starting to come together.

Very well-written and conceived. I think the anthem concept is dead on!

I don't mean this as any kind of a joke when I say that I hear someone like Hannah Montana singing this. She's my daughter's favorite singer (other than me) right now, so I've been forced to watch the show a few (several) times. This is right up her alley. Having this song sung from a 17 year-old girl's perspective would really give it a powerful impact.

Just a thought...

Hey Jim, we have been tossing the idea of having Chelsea sing lead on this one but ultimately decided against it. Reason being is that this is song number 4 for our EP and we want to keep the vocals along the same lines for all four songs.

The lyrics in the song now were actually written to be sung by Chelsea. That is why the point of view is written "me, my" etc. We are re-tracking the lead vocals with a third party POV.

Lonnie

Oh ya, that is coming along nicely. That really adds to the feel of it. I'm liking the the way it works lyrically as well at the moment but will keep an open mid if things change.

Hey all, I uploaded the latest version. Still needs work but it is coming together. We are still goint to re-track all the vocals but music wise I think we are done. Don wants to do the acoustic part again but for the most part this is done musically.

The timing in the vocals is a bit messed up and we are going to do the choir thing for the the outro chorus'

Fun song to work on. It's cool doing some positive music as a lot of our stuff seems to be so dark all the time.

[b]Leaving the Past Behind[/quote]

Cast amongst the sea of blue… they must anxiously wait,
And all of them there to see me… scripted precision fate,

One by one, soon it’s my turn,
Cheers and fears and a great big sigh,

Is this a leap into the future?
Or leaving the past behind,
No one really knows for sure
But the world is all mine!

Some will have gifted lives, some merely survive,
Classic of our youth today, tomorrow’s just another day,

Dreamers see and realists bleed,
They can’t see behind my eyes,

Is this a leap into the future?
Or leaving the past behind,
No one really knows for sure,
But the world is all mine!

It’s hard to understand, no open book, no real plan
Most are sure to agree, this is how it was meant to be,

So many more lessons to learn,
Now we must say goodbye,

Is this a leap into the future?
Or leaving the past behind,
No one really knows for sure,
But the world is all mine!

Is this a leap into the future?
Or leaving the past behind,
No one really knows for sure,
But the world is all mine!

BH, did you upload another version last night? If so I'll go take a listen in a bit. Still got a lot of running around to do yet this afternoon.

Hey Noise, about the only thing I have done on this in the last couple of days is I worked on the 12 string sitting better in the mix. Tomorrow we are re-tracking the vocals with some changes to the POV.

We also have worked out a plan as to getting the choir sound to work.

New lyrics will be as below. Funny cause these were pretty much the lyrics that we started out with but then changed later on only to change it back again.

I'll wait and listen when the changes are made then. Time for me to head to bed for the night. Been a long weekend, and still didn't get everything done. Although I did get to the race track with dB and his daughter and Tuna last night to see some stuff get wrecked. I'll post some video when I get em uploaded to youtube hopefully tomorrow night.

I like the effects on the Vox, reminds me of 'Learning to Fly' Plink Floyd.

You should present this for one of those shows on Nickelodeon like 'save by the bell' or what ever it was called.

It's got that catchy young feel about it.

BH,
Awesome my man! If this goes as it should, you'll have to put led boots on it to keep it from flyin' too high.

Ain't it great when a plan comes together?

Thanks a lot guys!

We are still working on this and have really brought it up a notch. We were able to fit in a bridge/solo, adjusted the POV and retracked everything from scratch.

This Monday we should have it all rebuilt and ready for upload. I'll let you all know when it is uploaded as I would really appreciate comments on the new version. The basic idea is still the same as far as melody and such but, ya, it's another full minute longer.

Cheers,

Hey all, the latest version of this song is now uploaded. This is still in the rough stages but it now has a bridge/solo. Drums are still basic and the vocal tracks still need to be re-done (Monday). Because we are still tracking I haven't spent a lot of time mixing and such. It's coming together though.

Thanks everyone for you comments. I hope you like this version even more.

Um, I kinda like it as is for the most part. I like the way Chelsea's voice is blending in now. I see you went with a bit stronger acoustic feel to it, nice indeed. It really ads to the feel and lets the vocals come out stronger. I like the way the undertoned guitar licks work out.

I take it you are going to skip the full on huge kids chorus thing then?

Either way this is sounding great.

Hey noise, we might still do the choir thing. I was thinking of having it right at the end but we'll see. Gonna mess with it but it might not be necessary.

As for the acoustic, I love the sound of 12-strings and wanted it to be a big part of this song.

Don is still going to do the lead vocals over again. I'm still using his scratch track. The new vocals won't trip up so much as it does right now.

Another few days and this one should be done... that is unless we do add the choir part. That might take a bit longer.

I keep listening and liking it more and more. Very cool theme really. I love the changes as it moves along. And indeed Chelsea's voice really does add to this for sure.

so i'm late getting to this, but cool song. If the lead vocals haven't been redone yet, I would say the hook vocals seemed to lack the energy that this song calls for, just something to think about during the process (sorry if I'm too late...).

Yeah, I don't know too much about Hanna Montana, but I could definitely see some disney show swooping this up. Get your ASCAP royalties on!

Really though, very cool song! I like the chorusy/delay type effect on the lead vox, and the back up vocals sound nice too (they were needed!). Awesome.

Hey coolo, the lack of energy in the vocals has long been recognised as a weekness we have. It really wasn't until recently that we overcame certain berriers that even got us singing. Don (who is singing lead) has improved leaps and bounds. I feel good when he sings though as I know that it is a delivery of what we have to say and for that he does really well. I think Don's vocals could sound better if I found a different way of bringing them out. In this song we experimented a lot with layered vocals. I think the layering has done a lot to prevent his vocals from coming through. I've been messing with the vocals a lot and will probably do a re-mix tonight.

Noise, the very fact that you listened to it more than once is a great compliment to us. It is somewhat of a challenge to get ANYONE to listen at times. I feel for the musician that is trying to make a living in music.

Take care all and I'll try to upload a re-mix this evening.
