Hey,
I'm setting up a home studio for my band to record our stuff on and I need advice on everything to get.

I have a great room which I can soundproof and I can have a computer cleared just for recording with whatever program ye think best (Protools,Logic etc.)

But it's equipment we need.
I dont know exactly what we would need as I'm new but I'm thinking of the following:

Good headphones
A vocal condenser mic (w/windshield)
An instrument condenser mic
A drum mic set
USB Mixer (I was thinking of a USB or Firewire mixer, to go straight into PC)
Phantom Power Supply

Can you give me tips on what would be best in any of the list above or anything that I am missing from my list.

And do you think this is the best method to go about making recordings of a band.

Our budget is around 500-600 Euro which is roughly upto $800, What would you recommend to get, etc. etc.

Sorry for just coming on and asking loads of questions but I really need help on this so any info would be much appreciated.

Welcome to HRC.

Wow, pretty ambitious list for only $800...I'd suggest hitting eBay and getting some used stuff.

How do you plan to record, one instrument at a time or many at once, if many, how many?

You'll prob want a small pile of headphones, so that changes things, unless you guys can record one track at a time (usually not). Record to a click, if at all possible.

I've used some labtec phones in the past I loved, but I can't get them anymore. Tracking phones aren't critical, you just need to hear each other, backing tracks, etc. Try to get them closed though, so sound doesn't bleed out and into a mic (vocals, usually).

Get a decent pair for you (control room) and for partial mixing (i use phones and monitors). There's HD280 for 99$ that Tadpui loves (on here).

The AT2020 is a good starting point. (condensor mic). I've used a studio projects B3, and now use a C1. I like them both.

I bought a nt5 pair for instruments (400$). I like them very much. Samson has a SDC pair that Noize has used, he likes them lots for the price.

drum mic kit - no real help. I've got a put-together set (2 sm57, SPB3, NT5) that I'll use when I track (haven't yet).

whosyourdaddy has said the alesis i/o24 (or is it 26) is a nice board, i'd be tempted to look into that if I were looking. Firewire, i think, and keeps 8 channels separate. There's a few more, but the $$$ goes up from the alesis.

Any board will (should) have phantom power, so that's not an issue.

It'll be tight to get all this for 800$, but keep your ear to the ground and you can probably squeak through.

You may want to think about monitors, or some sort of speakers to hear your mixing on. I split my time about thirds, between my headphones, my computer speakers, and my good monitors.

hth, good luck, and have fun.

It would help if you could fill out your profile with the gear you already own so we kinda know where you are at.

Hey, Thanks a million for the help

Well we were planning on recording everything seperately, I know it's ambitious but I was planning on picking up used items if needed budget wise .

Oh, OK, separately saves money then, only needing a small interface. You can use a simple stereo in/out interface like the M-Audio Audiophile 2496 (about $80) if you are OK with mixing drums down to streo tracks and recording it that way, or a Delta 44 if you want to keep them as four tracks. Either way, not too expensive. Of course, you'll need a small mixer, the size of which depends on how you plan to mix the drums pre-recording.

Hey,

After some more planning, we have some ideas of what we are getting, and any help or feedback would be good.

Firstly we were looking at this mixer

Alesis MultiMix 8USB - We are getting this for 150 Euro and don't think when recording everything seperately we will need anything better.

Vocal Condenser Mic:

T BONE SC400 Large Diaphram Vocal Condenser
w/ Shock Mount + Case + T Bone Windshield
= 76 Euro (Thomann)

Instrument Condenser Mic,
T BONE EM9600 (My brother was looking this up so I don't know the details of this but it's on thomann and is roughly 70 Euro).

Again there is a drum mic kit that my brother was looking up for 200 Euro which includes everything and is a 7 piece kit from Thomann.

After these we are planning on getting 2 good quality headphones at a budget of roughly 40-60 Euro each.

Other than that I'm not sure of what else to get, again this is recording everything seperately and we know where not going to get the greatest recording ever, it's just that it costs 200 Euro a day for a studio in Ireland and being all students it's not something we can afford.
