i just started using cool edit pro on my lap top and i have a problem with multitrack. i put my beat/instrumental on tack 1, then armed record on track 2 and hit the record button
my vocals record fine on track 2...but you can still hear the beat playing under my voice?? its not track 1 (the instrumental track) because i muted it just to make sure! this wasnt my problem
ive noticed this only happend with head phones plugged in! ut if they are not plugged in the mic will pic up the beat lol!
i need some advice BAD ! whut am i doing wrong?
thanks so much for your time and please get back to me asap if y can!

Jul 31, 2007 08:56 am Maybe I'm missing something here, but it sounds like the mic is picking up the playback from the headphones. Open backed headphones obviously project sound the most. Vic Firth and others put out heavly insulated "isolation" headphones just to address this. There is less sound outside the headphone during playback. Especially if you are using a higher quality condenser mic; those things will pick up mouse farts.
Jul 31, 2007 01:00 pm check your computers volume control and make sure under the record tab, 'what you hear' is NOT checked.
Jul 31, 2007 02:51 pm thanks a lot for the help guys!
ive messed around with a few things to see if i can figure out whut exactly is causing this, and heres what ive found so far.
i pluged my mic in, took it into my booth and left the instrumental playing outside the booth!(not on head phones) the mic picked up nothing but me talking.
then i plugged in my head phones took them in the booth and left the mic outsdie this time....and guess whut happend? it recorded the instrumental playing and nothing but white noise from the mic being out side the booth!
the mic was so far away that it couldnt have picked up what was comming through the head phones! its as if when i plug head phones in, it records whats playing through the head phones?...with or without a mic plugged in??
it like when i plug head phones in, the computer records what ever is playing through the sound card. like the mic and sound output get set to the same channel but only when head phones are plugged in!
i hope this helps in swiftly resolving this problem....thanks agin for the replys and please get back to me!
p.s. i tried messing with the volumes like mentioned above! the only way i found to prevent the instrumental from recording on the vocal track, is to turn WAVE volume all the way down.
but if i do that i cant hear my instrumental at all to stay on beat...this is madness lol, i even tried playing the beat through winamp and hitting record in cool edit! and it actually recorded whut was playing in winamp....like its recording what ever plays through the sound card. but like i mentioned before ONLY WITH THE HEAD PHONES PLUGGED IN! LOL
Jul 31, 2007 03:39 pm sorry for the double post, i jsut noticed something even stranger, maybe it has soemthing to do with my problem!
i hit record in cool edit, no beat wa splaying no mic was plugged up, it was recording a flat line! THEN i bumped my lap top...and i was the flat line spike?
so i started tapping on the lap top and it actually recorded it... like the computer has some sort of internal mic!? but i cant find a volume for it or anything
not sure if this helps with my problem but i think im making some progress in narrowing down what is causing it!
any help or advice would be greatly appriciated! thank you
Jul 31, 2007 03:51 pm whoa, it very well may have a little mic around the monitor or something, some do.
Weird.

Jul 31, 2007 04:24 pm laptops often have a microphone, like a very small hole, somewhere on the device.
That's probably an issue.
You'd want to turn that off in the windows control panel for audio apps. Mute it.
Then tell your software to use the external mic, if you can.
Jul 31, 2007 05:18 pm thats what i was thinking...but i cant find an option to turn it off or anything.
so i tried recording on my desktop computer and it does the same thing, if you plug in head phones/line out it records what ever plays through the sound card...with no mic plugged in or anything!
but when i tap my desktop it DOESNT record the sound of me tapping it like the laptop does!
thanks for the replys please keep um comming!

Jul 31, 2007 06:36 pm oh... thats... uh... loopback?
Its for recording your soundcards output... not that M$ puts piracy tools in XP as standard or anything... :/
but (not using windows at the moment) in the windoze mixer there should be an options menu... and click properties... there should be a 'recording' radio button and also I think a list of things with checkboxs like 'What U Hear'...or Loopback... uncheck those and that should do it for you.
Jul 31, 2007 10:52 pm cant find anything that says loop back....i went into the mindows mixer through cool edit and the only thing that was checked was microphone. i dont know how to disable the output to the sound card and still be able to hear the beat through the head phones.
its so odd, with out head phones plugged in it doesnt record anything but what comes through the mic...but as soon as i plug anything, even desktop speakers into the headphone/lineout port it starts recording whatever is playing throug it
thanks for your reply good sir! once again pleasekeep them comming!
