Song writing contests - waste of time?

Do any of you guys have experiences of entering on-line song writing competitions?

Usuaualy you pay a fee ($20?) submit a song and get some criticism back about it. They have a winning song in each category and an overall winner. I wondered if it's a good way of breaking out of the bedroom and gaining some wider attention for your compositions (assuming you have some success of course).

Are they a rip off? Has someone had some success as a result of one? If so, which one?

Well I don't know which ones, as I have never entered any.

I really wanted to know if you guys reomend any, haveany of you had some good feedback or success as a result of just entering, or do you know anyone else who has personaly?

On the face of it, if you are convinced you have a great song, it seems like a good way of getting it heard by someone in the industry who has the ability to put you intouch with the right people etc. That is, if the whole thing isn't just a money making rip off!

I mean it's a guaranteed way of getting someone in the industry to listen to you on the face of it.

yeah I've got such messages in my email... but I'm too broke to even give it a go. lol. I don't know... only thing I could suggest is if it sounds good and you can afford to lose then give it a try. Lifes too short not to take some chances.
