Midi Recording with a Yamaha PSR-295

Yeah so a PSR-295 just happened to fall into my hands recently, and i'd like to start recording with it but i'm not sure on how to do that i'm a little shaky on the midi-recording. I think you need an external sequencer but i'm fairly new to all midi recording and well recording in general. It doesn't have any midi-plug outlets all it has is a USB, input, sustain pedal, and Adapter of course. =P If anyone could help me on how to maybe get this working i'd be much obliged.

Welcome to HRC.

The USB connection is actually a midi interface as well as the data port for importing midi files into the keyboard.

As for recording the midi data, yes you will need a sequencing program that allows midi recording. If you are looking to get semi serious with it Cakewalk www.cakewalk.com has some entry level programs that would work just great for you. Otherwise there are a few freeware programs out there that can do both midi and audio. Most of the freeware do only audio but several do midi as well.

That would allow you to record your midi data and either play it back through the keyboard or a software synth or sampler on your PC.

oo thanks, now I was considering getting this for guitar/bass.

www.zzounds.com...item--BEHUCA202

Do you think its possible to just plug it into the keyboard? Even though it'd probably record it as audio not as midi. Another thing, I'm beginning to use audacity for my recordings i'm not sure if I can use that to record midi, but do you think you can point me in the direction of some midi recording freeware?

Also if I was to get that item would I be able to record with it using Audacity (Via a usb plug)? Sorry i'm new to this.

I'll be very honest here with you. For $30.00 you are not going to get anything better then a stock sound card type set up. And honestly, more people have had trouble with that unit as well as the Tascam unit which sells for more money. I would honestly look more toward something from M-Audio or the like for a decent audio interface that will cost a little bit more but the performance and stability will be ten times better.

so your suggesting I instead of getting that or a stock sound card system I should get an M-Audio?

Something along the lines of this maybe?

www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/JamLab-main.html

also as far as software I ironicly enough downloaded anvil studios and it seems to work pretty good with the keyboard except it doesn't use the midi instruments from the keyboard it records them as A Piano midi and than I can change it to their own midi insruments. And I have audacity which seems to work fine for recording now its just a matter of mixing the two midi and .wav/mp3 files together which I think I can do with Anvil studios?

Well the Audiophile is from M-Audio and is a good quality 2 channel audio interface card. The JamLab is kind of a guitar only interface and I believe it is only 1 channel input as opposed to 2 channel. IF that would suit your needs then it might be the route for you to go.

Hell ya, I use my UX-2 more then my fully loaded POD xt these days. I love the fact it can do guitar, bass and has some killer mic pre amps models in it as well that I have been using the crap out of.

For the money I don't think you will find another audio interface/guitar, bass, pre amp modeler on the planet that can compete with that.
