What sample rate do you record at?

I'm looking at buying a new multichannel preamp with A/D conversion. I usually don't record higher than 48kHz, but I was wondering what you guys do? Thanks!

I'm on 48, as I'm too lazy to try anything else. I may experiment someday, but other's have done it already, and seem to be happy with 48.

so i am too =).

Frankly, I don't hear a difference when recording up at 88.2 and 96... And then you get into the 176.4 and 192kHz, it's crazy! And the CD is only going to be 44.1kHz anyway, so what's the point?

Brandon Drury over at Recordingreview said that he spend big $$$ on good converters, but he didn't hear as much of a change as compared to treating his room for bad sound. That was a bigger improvement.

=/

44.1 here...despite any aliasing issues i take comfort in not having to downsample...that's my home setup.

at work we run at 48....just incase.

48. I do hear or maybe believe I hear....who knows, a difference between 44.1 and 48. Every once and a while I will do something with a dvd. Nuttin serious, but the 48 works out well. As far as premting higher resolutions, nope. I'll deal with it when it comes.

44.1 - always considered doing something at 88.2 or 96 but haven't got round to it yet. There are some samples i really like that run at 44.1 so i tend to stay there in case i want to use some of them.

I've found that using higher sampling rates gives you a little bit more "space" to work with when mixing. That said, the comments that others have made about treating a room, etc, are definitely more important. If you have the luxury of higher sampling rates, they're a good tool to have in the toolbox. I generally use 48k as my standard. If I'm doing something thats got alot of nuances (like a session I did recently with a really warm guitar and bright voice and alot of room sound), I'll somtimes go all the way up to 192 (scary). You downsample to 44.1 for CD, but theres alot of steps where sounds are interacting before that downsample and the higher resolution can sometimes make a difference.

Now for a loud rock band, all distorted guitars and no dynamics, I doubt I'd think about going above 48k. But I do think there are times when using the higher res's gives you some benefit.

I use mostly 44.1 but I'm going to try some higher sample rates in the near future.

Do you all think it would be a bad idea to get a preamp that limits me to 48k? I think it might be one of those things that I may kick myself in the future... But really, 48 should be plenty high... I think.

yeah....we're talking DVD quality here! is HD 96k?

and also i'd rather use (not that i think i'll ever) 176.4khz over 192 if you're gooin' for a standard CD....the math is simpler to stick with multiples of 44.1 like 88.2 and so on...

48, 96, and 192 are better off for dooin' DVD audio....heheh or DVDA! ยง;oD

that's my own personal theory and i've NEVER read it anywhere or have it been told to me...it just makes sense.

I agree with ya man, it goes into 44.1 evenly. But the frequencies that might get messed up in the conversion are so high I don't think you'd notice... But again, just knowing you're doing it right makes me happy, haha.

For normal use a I do 32 bit at 48k. But if I'm doing sample or hi rez work I go to 96k as the rezolution is much better. If I know I'm going to be doing a lot of editing and twisting I will use 192k when possible. For that kind of work it is the best when you know you are going to be ripping the original audio to shreds. It just makes for much finer editing possibilities.
