Mic Inputs Unequal

Hi everyone,

I've been pulling my hair out trying to figure out what seems to be a very simple problem. I'm hoping someone will be able to help me!

I've got a Presonus Firebox connected to my pc laptop using firewire cable (1394?) I'm using Cubase LE which came with the Firebox to record some tracks. Basically I've got a condenser mic in each of mic inputs 1 and 2 (the standard 3 pin connectors...called xlr?) I have Cubase running and mic input one works perfectly...registering an audio signal, but mic input two barely registers a singnal, even with knobs turned all the way up. I've gone into all the settings, the second track is activated to record just like track one. Any ideas? I've switched mics, and both work great in input 1, but not in 2. I should mention that if I record and play back the track, I can still hear something out of 2 (despite no waveform on the screen) but it's way softer than 1.

Any ideas?

Thanks!
Dave

Welcome to HRC first off.

Now then, what type of mic's are they? Dynamic or condenser? One of each or both the same?

In the software mixer panel are both the input levels set the same? And are both set to mic input?

Also, do you have the input gains on the Firebox itself set to the same or similar level if the mics are the same? Also if the mic's are condenser is the phantom power on? I will assume yes if both are working fine in the first input.

One thing it might be is if you are only powering it off the FireWire connection itself. I have noticed that the thing does not seem to be able to power two mics at once when powering only via the FireWire connection. You will probably have to use a power supply connected to it to actually get enough juice to power two mics at once, especially if running phantom power and turning up the pre amps on it.

Let us know a few details and we'll get you squared away.

ya gotta turn on the phantom power...(48V) to power the mics...

welcome to hrc!
