Firepod or Alesis io26?

I am trying to decide between buying the Firepod or Alesis io26 firewire interfaces.

I have the feeling that the firepod will give better sound quality in my recordings, but the convenient road-worthy design of the Alesis as well as the lightpipe inputs make it seem like it could be useful for more things/for longer.

Any opinions?

Edit: BTW, I am not limited to these two. If you would like to suggest something else in this price range, please do so!

I'd be tempted to shell out a little more, and get the motu 8pre.

The Alesis unit offers a bit more bang for the buck in my opinion. The Pre's are much cleaner from what I have heard and it as well has a dedicated insert for each input channel right out front to get at it easier. The meters onboard are a plus as well.

And from what I have seen the driver's are a bit more stable as well and not nearly as picky about the firewire chipset you motherboard may have on it.

What about in something like this bundle?

I could definately use all the stuff in there, I already have a set of those mics and I actually find them quite usefull.

Oh, and I'd be getting that package from Guitar Center since they match stuff. It has better speakers, headphones and cables from them.

The only thing I can tell you about bundles like that one at MF is that is how they move out stock that is not selling. The monitor's are a slow mover so they can toss them into the bundle and make it look really good. The MXL mic's are probably the best part of that bundle to be honest with you.

But that said, I do know several people here who once they got the FirePod running do like them and the sound.

i've got the io26 and am quite happy with it....the pre's do well for most modern mics (no ribbons here!) and the i/o flexibility (even two seperate headphone channels) is top notch for a unit this cheap....i'm not a big alesis lover but this product has delivered everything i expected of it...i just wish it had ADAT out to compliment the in's....not that i'd ever need 'em...but yeah phantom power and inserts on all 8 channels is a pretty sweet deal.

Well the thing about that bundle is that Guitar center will match it for me.

they will upgrade the monitors to the M-Audio BX5a's, and upgrade the headphones and cables as well because they dont have that other stuff.

I have those MXL mics, and like them a lot, so I wouldn't mind having a matched pair.

I just wish I could get that same package with the Alesis one......

Thanks man.

I actually already have a 990/991 set so now I'll have a stereo pair. so far I've been quite pleased with their preformance, especially for the cost.
