well we had a good night here at my place...we mixed explosives, beer, cigarettes, and rooftop all at once....i gotta admit, watchin' the display from the roof is the best idea i've had in a while.

Yeah it was a good holiday. I wish that I could spend every Wednesday slow-smoking ribs, working in the gardens, watching movies, drinking beer, and blowing stuff up.

No accidents or fires, so I have to declare it a successful 4th. Although I did come to realize why bottle rockets are outlawed in so many states...those things are freking dangerous!

My neighborhood is nuts on the 4th. Everybody that doesn't go out of town goes out into the streets and sets off firework displays as if they were out in the country. No fear!

I still have this giant firecracker that I didn't have the marbles to set off yesterday...my friend said it was basically a 1/2 stick of dynamite and would set off car alarms in the area. Its about 7" x 3/4". That one is going to have to be set off outside of town.

My neighbhood is like Tadpui's, it was basically a thick cloud of smoke all night...that's not all bad tho, as it helps keep the mosquito's away too.

I am buying my fireworks differently next year. I usually buy a couple multipacks of fireworks and select a few individuals by hand. The multipacks always come with lots of little junk that I never blow up until a few days later when I am bored.

Next year I am only picking the reloadable launchers...less to clean up, just the launcher, as the grenades you load end up blowing up and being no mess...usually, sometimes there are little cardboard tubes raining down, we got rained on with them a couple times last time.

Besides they are the most fun too, cuz you know people can see them from miles away. The little fountains that just sit on the ground can be cool, ya need a couple, but on the whole, the grenades are the best.

The kids like the little snappers and sparklers, those are 4th of July staples.

We went to see our local fireworks show... best one yet. There's a fireworks ban in effect here due to hot dry conditions, but sales weren't outlawed - go figure - and it didn't stop anyone from setting them off. They were everywhere.

But for fantastic BOOM factor without the flammability hazard, nothing beats a dry ice bomb. If you haven't tried one, you must!

We got a phone call from the local FD/Police stating that anyone caught with fireworks faced a $4000 fine (just for having them...more fines for letting them off!). Went to the local show. Sat at 'ground zero' in a recliner beach chair. Being underneath those puppies when they go off is amazing.

Cute kid alert:
After the show, Da Boy (nearly five) said, "Can we come here after school tomorrow for the fireworks?"
Aww. Bless his heart.

We have all sorts of fireworks laws here, anything that launches off the ground is illegal...so basically, anything fun. Doesn't stop anyone, I live 30 minutes or so from Wisconsin, they have no such foolishness.

Actually, until Gov. Ventura legalized a bunch it was all illegal except for sparklers and crap.

Same laws here as Minnesota, but the hardcores take the drive to Wyoming. There's a stand just across the state line that sells digital fireworks. I call them "digital" because they'll blow your fingers off.

Fortunately, my favorite stand that I always go to was right on the way to and from guitar jim's gig, so hell, as long as I was drivin right by, ya know? :-)

The laws never stop anyone...between a half dozen of us pyro's in my neighborhood, our combined work rivaled the city's show.

Fireworks of all kinds are illegal in almost every city in the bay area (except for like 3 or 4). Most people go to the sanctioned big boom events, and this year it wasn't even foggy in SF, which it normally is for the 4th. I saw a big production this past weekend up in a tiny northern california town that was the best I've ever seen. Yesterday we just did some sparklers and some tiny fountains and ground blooms, that we've had for like 10 years. My younger cousins who have not grown up around fireworks like me and my sister did were super afraid of these little things as if any thing with flame is gonna start the lawn or a telephone pole or a tree on fire. Me, i'm sticking sparklers in the back of my hat and running aroung like a jack *** and then laughing when my neck gets burned!

Barbequed at my grandparents and had a grand time. Nobody even complained about the fact that i was sporting a fresh mini mohawk, which was great!

I was amazed when I moved to KC at how lax the enforcement is for the fireworks laws on the 4th. EVERYBODY is blowing stuff up from about a week before the 4th until midnight or later on the 4th. Its cool to go sit on the roof and look south to see all of the professional displays around town...the entire horizon is covered with little colored explosions from backyard displays too.

In my hometown, if you as much as light a Black Cat you've got the cops on your doorstep in a heartbeat.

In Santa Barbara they have a great show. This year they had to eliminate the "Salute" explosives from their show as the Mayor complained that it upset people's pets.
She had a couple of animals run off one 4th of July due to being scared by the noise of the salutes.

This is the same mayor who led the Summer Solstice parade in gold sneakers and a tutu...

I have no problem with neighbors blowing stuff up on the 4th of July (or even the few days surrounding the 4th.) But, you need to know when to quit! 2:00 in the morning is not really an appropriate time for brick after brick of firecrackers. The neighbors down the hill from me were shooting stuff off all night, and it was pretty cool to watch. But let a guy get some sleep!

I didn't get to see the city fireworks at FreedomFest because I was working in the beer tent all the while fireworks were going on. Since I was right there at "ground zero", I could feel 'em...and it was cool to see them light up the grounds and all of the people's faces for sure! Besides, working in the beer tent has it privileges...not the least of which is the ability to sample that which I'm selling!

An amusing side note to our display was the concussions from the fireworks making the accompanying music CD skip.

We drive about 5 minutes up to the top of the local mountain range and watch 4 cities blow off fireworks from there. Can't hardly hear the noise, but easy to see!

to me it was the noize (espically huge booms) that make them cool...the 'pretty sparks' don't do much for me. Oooo and the delay between when ya see 'em then hear them.

At least I know not to hold a mortar in my hand while firing it :)

I was bored and googling yesterday when I came across this photo that definitely put the fear of explosives in me:

I'm tellin' ya, it's dry ice, man. I've never heard of anyone being injured by flying shrapnel from these things, because the bottle usually stays in one or two pieces, and the pieces almost never fly very far. The 3 liter bottles make the best booms, and the 16 to 24 oz sizes make nifty hand grenades. You have to be quick to screw the caps on and throw the smaller ones though.

A much more pleasant picture of my daughter waving a sparkler while the neighbor's fireworks explode overhead:

Sounds like everyone had some fun on the 4th for sure. Myself, on the roof alone drinking a few cocktails and watching the surrounding light show's.

Nice thing for me is I am a registered pyrotechnical operator. This was due to needing to be licensed in order to do the show on the lake every year. It did however have its benefit's though for sure. It allowed me to legally purchase and transport anything into MN without penalty. Although we usually had it trucked in as my insurance would not have covered anything that blew up due to fireworks.

But we had many good shows up at the lake for sure.

And indeed, that is a grizzly pic for sure. but Jims daughter with a sparkler is what it is all about for sure.

I sat with dB and the girls last year while they lit em off. I should have gone there this year as well, probably more fun that sitting alone on the roof.

i have always wanted to make my own fireworks from scratch. the 16 year old in me loves that idea. in fact i tried, many times, as a 16 year old. i wish i could take a class. this could be endless fun...

Because I never made it a common known factor as there are several who would be asking me to truck a boat load of illegal stuff back here. dB is not on that list however) And if anyone ever got busted with it I would be the one to get cracked. And as well, the temptation to light that kind of stuff off in a neighborhood would be something I could not resist. :-)

And I haven't done the lake show now for two years. Besides, I never considered it a big deal. Not sure if I'm gonna re-up my license after next year. The thrill is kind of gone now that the lake place is up for sale. And I'm not sure I wanna spend the money on something I may never use again in my lifetime.
