most of the 'heaviness' that I see is more based on tuning than equipment... atleast drop D...but usually drop B/C for hardcore...

in a word, tOObs.

but to answer your question, as for pedals, you can't beat line 6, big muff, or tube screamer (if you have a tube amp).

I still like a modded DS-1...still the coolest distortion in my opinion, dirty, but simple. They're cheap to, and the mod costs about $15 or so if you can do it yourself.

Line 6 has a couple great gritty models, their rectifier is pretty nasty...or even their custom model, Line 6 "Insane" I think is one very wicked distortion.

As far as what the heaviest bands use, I dunno, I don't listen to that heavy of bands, but I agree with zek, much is done my tuning down.

MXR distortion + and the marshall Guvnor are pretty nice high gain overdrives, wouldn't say the heaviest though.

Most of the heaviest guitar sounds actually don't use all that much distortion. At least not as much as you'd think.

Mesa/Boogie probably owns the market for heavy guitar sounds. Their single/double/triple rectifier combos and stacks seem to be the most popular choices for the heavy guitar crowd.

Krank is another mass-produced amp that is used for heavy guitar a lot, as well as Hughes and Kettner (sp?).

But lots of those heavy guitar guys use some botique amps like Bogner...those uber-expensive amps that only a pro would be crazy enough to spring for.

Pedals can help for tone shaping, but the body of the distortion itself usually comes from the power section of a tube amp.

I got the digitech RP250, and it's got some very heavy patches on there. Also, there's a community on their website where you can download patches for your favourite players' sounds. $150 ish.

Okay...here's where the Digitech haters begin their trashing of me...

Bwahahahah!

I've owned both and Behringer is decent for the money (actually, great for the money), but not even close to Line 6 in terms of quality, and cost not in the equation.

I use a vintage RAT coupled with a tube screamer, and sometimes an MXR distortion plus if i want it really gritty. iIthink distortion is like using a limiter, the heaviest pedals give an "impression" or "perception" of heaviness without really doing that much. If you had something that was tearing up your signal like say... a metal zone... it turns to mush really fast.

But on that note, a really cool pedal ive seen is teh one from mesa boogie, its huge, has tubes in it and is obviously an attempt to capture their power amps im guessing their gonna have some pretty insane gain.

In terms of heaviest distortion... I actually think alot of older bands had WAY heavy tones and newer bands r kind of airy. Remember System of Downs "Sugar" with that ending build up, that guitar tone was like getting kicked in the stomach. Can't forget slipknots self titled album either, even some stuff from silverchair. But in terms of bands nowadays, id say KillSwitch Engage, poison the well and such, but i really think their tones r a result of post production than anything.

I have always liked Randall amps, never paid attention to endorsements or anything, but any Randall I have ever played thru has been very good sounding. Never realized thats what DimeBag had...

Randall has some good stuff, especially for metal. I'm not sure if Dimebag did much recording with those amps but he endorsed them for a while. Solid-state, no less!

Randall has that cool amp where you have an amp that's just a tube power section and a cabinet. Then you buy modules that contain preamp designs from other amps...like the Fender blackfaces, Marshall Plexi, etc.

Haha, stealing others' preamp designs? Oh man, where does this fit into my moral code? If Uli did it, I'd be pissed. I'm going to go meditate for a while :) At least Randall gives credit where credit is due. :D

They did, huh? I drew up plans for a prototype for something similar, a cab with a rack in it to piece together the amp one wants, while still having a ease of a combo amp...had some cool features and ideas cookin...never did get it made though, even have guitar and bass guitar options for the cab...

Do it! I don't think that Randall has much (if any) competetion in this arena. Could be a niche ripe for the picking, especially in a low-wattage tube variety. That section of the amp market is really taking off after the success of Epiphone's Valve Junior and Fender's Blues Junior.

Build an optional power attenuator into it ala THD and you've got a winner.

My deal was more open ended, not created anything but the cab/rack combo with a choice of speaker arrangements. Everything else is chosen from whatever you want...from anyone. My concentration was the cabinet, building a nicely tuned cab with storage space for cables, strings, pedals and junk, leaning back on to dolly wheels for ease of moving around and stuff.

All the electronics would be up to the user...

I actually have two products I was considering for branding with the HRC brand and selling, but damn, that pesky limit of 24 hours in a day...

They heaviest distortion out now is really a relative question.
One thing to keep in mind is that most bands who have that "super" heavy sound on their record sound nothing like that live. In the studio they're often layering 4-8 guitar tracks, with multiple amps and other processing like compression and EQ.

That being said, if you're looking for an amp for live. Then you have to go tube. Some good brands are the rectifier series from Mesa Boogie/ Hughes and Kettner Triamp and then the bigger bands are using some great boutique amps like Bogner, Framus, Diezel, etc. These amps cost several thousands of dollars. In order to get good distortion out of em you have to crank them. This is why getting a 50 watt amp is a better choice as it'll distort quicker.

Another great amp is the Peavey 5150, most of the death metal bands etc. are using this amp, it's really heavy and not so expensive used. I use the Peavey XXX which is similar but has 3 channels. Also, make sure it has 6L6 tubes in the power amp. EL34's are what you find in Marshall's and tend to be more pronounced in the midrange ala the Marshall sound.

If you're going for just a heavy sound for recording your options are far more expanded. You can get lower wattage and possibly pedals. Just keep in mind with pedals that what sounds good at low levels in your bedroom will probably sound like crap turned up on stage in a mix with a other instruments.

Don't scoop the mid's all the way, they are your friend and give you clarity. Lower tunings may help as well.

As far as multi-pedals, digitech makes great stuff as well as Line-6, but keep in mind these things sound totally different when turned up loud in a mix with other instruments.

Your cab will be a factor, the speakers are made for different styles. Another thing you can try is coupling 12 in. speakers with 15in. speakers ala the Dimebag stack, that can help produce some heaviness as well.

In the end though, it'll also come from your technique. How you palm-mute how you hit the strings and the pickups you're using.

If you want a heavy as hell tone, check out the Line 6 uber metal pedal. It's worth buying just for the
"pulverize" tone alone. I believe the only other line 6 product that has the "pulverize" tone is the vetta 2 head or combo, which sells for around $1600.
Plus it has a built in noise gate. Blows any other distortion pedal out of the water hands down.

I will always come back to good amp distortion. Like off a 5150 or something. It just sounds better than these fuzz pedals.
