So we have been in this "Big Star" band contest sponsored by one of the local country music radio stations (WAXX 104.5). Here's the site:

www.bigstarcontest.com/

We have made it down to the final two, and so we are one of the bands opening up for .38 Special when they come to Eau Claire on June 15th for their Sawdust City Days celebration. Whichever band gets the most online votes will perform right before .38 Special, the other band will go on first. Either way...it should be cool! (Feel free to vote for us if you follow the above link! And you can watch the short little video that they put together.)

Of these two remaining bands, one will be chosen to perform on the main stage at Country Jam USA in Eau Claire on July 20th, in front of 30,000 people! We feel like we have an honest shot at it, particularly since we are the only band that even does any country songs on a regular basis.

I'll let you know it it turns out...and I promise not to forget you when we're famous! ;-)

As long as you guys play Little Sister you'll do fine. I voted for ya and will do so from some other PC's. I'm guessing they track IP's so you cant vote more then once, but I'll try again tomorrow and see.

Best of luck. That would be one kick but show to open for.

Oh ya, and congrats as well.

Thanks fellas!! I was talking to one of the guys in charge of the event when we played our casino gig. He said that the voting is really just a formality, and that the judges really determine who does what. I suppose the voting is their way of generating some excitement in their event. Also, he said the web site is very un-sophisticated, and that multiple votes from the same IP are not tracked at all...so you can imagine how many times I've voted!

We find out tomorrow which slot we get for the .38 Special gig.

Well, indeed then I'll just sit for a few minutes and click away just in case a landslide of votes might get ya in.

And we'll be wishing hard for you here. Either spot will be great, but being just before .38 Special would rock entirely all too much..

As for the stage fright. Simple solution is don't look past the first two or three row's. Besides, thats were most of the groupies are anyway, if they aren't already backstage.

Well, you guys must have been clickin' away, because the stage manager called me today to say that The Cutaways will be on right before .38 Special!

Excuse me while I wet myself.

OK, so we did the gig tonight. If I do say so myself, we frickin' rocked! It was 90 degrees and I was dripping with sweat by the time we were done.

.38 Special was pretty good too! We didn't get to rub elbows with them or anything. In fact, they refused to come off the bus until everybody was cleared out from the backstage area.

It was a great time. I just told myself that this was a once in a lifetime opportunity, and that I wanted to have fun and that I didn't want to ruin it by being too nervous. It worked...I had a blast!

Now it's up to the judges and the voters. One of us will get to play at Country JAm in July!

Jeezuz, that's just lame...it's not like they have had a hit in a decade...

Regardless, very glad all went well for ya!

Man that sucks to hear a group would have that kind of air about them. I've been fortunate enough to meet Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Luther Allison at different times, and some other greats. Not in any way of playing with them or opening up or anything. But just as and admirer. And these guys sat down and had a drink with me and/or offered advice or just encouraged me to stick with it. And they are and were true icons of the blues. They didn't have to do that, I think they call it being a class act.. Lets just say as far as 38 special goes thats a level of success I hope never to achieve. And congratulations!

Yes,that bands attitude is not like that of the well known people I,ve met or gigged with. They were all really nice and down to earth.

Oh, and on a side note...

I had an interesting conversation with my 13 year-old son who was at our show and also at the 38 Special portion. He and his buddies were right up front. He reports that he got to see his first pair of real live boobies as they were being flashed in the direction of the stage. Five times! That's ten boobies!

I'm so proud of that boy...

Jim that is great you had a good time and it went well. I'm guessing that they didn't want anyone there to see them as they are now older then either you or I. And I bet they have not aged well at all.

I've seen it several times throughout my years. No pictures and very few public appearances up close and personal.

dB, they haven't had a hit in well over a decade, over 2 decades if my math is right.

Lastly, Jim I'm glad you have that attitude about the boobies thing. But be certain if he puts 2 and 2 together and realizes that the boobies were aimed at the stage for a reason, it may induce a sudden urge to become a rock star.

The Cutaways are NOT goin' Big Time. We are NOT Big Stars. We are losers. We will NOT be rockin' the Big Stage at Country Jam. We will, however, be backstage in the VIP area playing music whenever there's not music on the main stage. (And drinking ourselves silly.)

By the way, thanks to everyone who voted for us!
