Mic Pre

Hello all, been too long.

I was curious as to what models that you guys would pick for a good medium to low end transformer mic preamp. I can't afford a neve-type, but that is close to the sound I want to aim for at this stage.

More specifically, if I have a low end mic pre and a low end sound card, if I upgrade at once to a say.. emu 1616, would that take care of both my sound card and mic pre in one shot?

by the way Noize.. still looking at the UAD-1 for the on board plugins per my question back in February. I'm slower than Christmas. :)

Hey Marcus, Feb was a long time ago for me. Life has not been running smoothly here so I may have dropped the ball on the UAD-1 thing. Refresh my memory on it please.

As for the E-mu card. I honestly don't recommend their audio interfaces as they are not much more then a glorified SoundBlaster in reality. Other's seem to like them but I have seen too many having headaches with them as well. And the patch mix software is not all it is cracked up to be.

How many inputs and outputs do you need to use at once? I may have just the thing to work for you. I'll check this post later and drop an idea or two your way.

Hi Noize, I (like most music passioners) am in a constant state of upheaval in the home studio arena. The U-AD thing we talked about was a loong time.. a zillion posts, questions, answers, cigarettes and hopefuly good movies ago for you I'm sure. It's nothing we need to resurface at this time.

Hope all is well with you.

I don't need alot of ins and outs, I'm not tracking full band stuff currently.

I look foward to the coming ideas from you.

Well something that might possible interest you then would be a Line 6 Toneport UX-2. It is a pretty simple all in one unit. It can do the guitar amp modeling like the POD series as well as bass amp modeling. But with the added bonus of having 2 XLR inputs with phantom power, which you simply run through the high end Pre amp models which are in there as well. So it is kind of a fill all the gaps interface unit. I have found myself turning to that even more then my fully loaded POD xt unit these days. Especially for the mic pre models which are absolutely killer for not only vocals but acoustic instruments as well. We reviewed both the UX-1 and UX-2 a little while ago and you can read that here. www.homerecordingconnecti...tory&id=727

It will also take a simple line in signal from synths or the like as well. To be honest I have found myself using the thing more then my bigger multi-channel interfaces as well. So that might be of interest and kill two birds with one stone for you and the price isn't bad at all for what you get.
