do you have to have a sound proof room or semi sound proof to make quality recordings?, if so what are some alternate ways of doings this instead of paying $100's for auralex

You don't have to soundproof a room to get great recordings. You DO have to sound "treat" a room though which is what I think you are referring to.

An alternate to Auralex is www.foambymail.com which is what I use and for the most part its pretty much the same.

Sound proofing and sound treating are two v ery different subjects. Sound proofing is simply making sure outside sound doesn't leak in the room and the sound inside the room doesn't leak out. Sound treatment is tuning a room...having some absorbing and some reflecting surfacing, a little diffusion, etc...that is pretty important...sound proofing isn't, but it can be a benefit at times.

I've been using moving blankets, hung from strategic points in my live room. Seems to work very well, though I've just done a few things with it.

They're pretty thick, so mid-high to high gets batted down pretty well. Low end is different, and you need mass, or air to slow it down. Both aren't easy =/.

A couch works well, as it's got both, mass and air. There's bass traps you can make from rigid fiberglass / mineral wool, etc. Ethan Winer has some good stuff, www.ethanwiner.com/basstrap.html

as does John Sayers:

Look through both of them, as there's good stuff in the forums, and other pages.

For cheap (which I'm) I'd say start with packing blankets, and a puffy chair / couch in your room, record and listen. Listening will be your key. Compare your recordings with other known good work, and try to get your recording as close as possible.

This certainly won't make your room sound like a 20x30x18ft sound room, but it should be usable.
