i am debating on which computer interface to buy an E-MU ($199, 24-bit) or the lexicon lambda ($149, 16-bit) i would like to buyy the emu because of the better bits, but the lambda comes with cubase le, which has a reverb plug in that has stuff like vocal enhancement, and the emu comes with proteus which may or mayy not be as good, has anyone used any of these programs/interfaces, which one should i get? or should i buy the emu and also buy a version of cubase le?

Which E-Mu device are you looking at, I'd like to check the two out and compare them. 16-bit is actually pretty old-school these days.

One thing to consider is that there are many other good audio interfaces in that price range, and all offer le versions of software from either Cakewalk or Steinberg. Some offer Abbleton as well. M-Audio ESI and several others have very good interfaces in that price range.

The only reason I state that is if you take a look around there are more people who have trouble getting things running correctly with the E-Nu interfaces then there are people who have it up and running well instantly. Its control interface is not very intuitive for a first time user and the driver issues some have run into are not easily solved.

But I must agree with dB on the interface doing at least 24 bit as that is becoming more of a usable standard for audio editing and processing.

Well I will be honest here. The E-MU cards are nothing more then glorified Creative SoundBlaster cards. They simply add a couple of different input and output choices to the card.

And your referance to CD quality isn't really relative here as CD quality is only 16 bit 44.100 khz. And other interfaces for that same money will give you much higher recording capability and still toss in the light version of some software.

Mastering software is something that in the end could or will be needed depending on how far you want to go with the recordings. If this is the beginning of the recording journey for you I suggest not investing in that type of software yet. It is not cheap by any means.

I guess one thing to start with here is how many inputs/outputs will you be needing to start with on an interface? What type of music will you be recording? Some of this will help get you going in the right direction.

what about this: Behnringer Podcaststudio Bundel w/ fire wire Interface link:

www.musiciansfriend.com/p...wire?sku=240559

the software probally isn't as good (Ableton Live Lite 4) but it says it has something that sounds kinof interesting, Xenyx Mic Preamp which they describe as 60's and 70's "British EQ", and also i don't think it has 2-track recording like the E-MU does, if you have a chance to check it out i would appreciate it, because i really don't know much about this stuff

If you can give us that info we can help you choose something that will serve you well. I can recommend 100 different interface, but you may need less or you may need more.

On the Behringer firewire thing. I am not impressed by any of the firewire interfaces as of yet. Most accept for a very few are having some major issues with the firewire chip on most pc's mother boards. They seem to only work well with a couple of them. And honest opinion here is I would not dive into it myself, so I really don't recommend them as high on the list.
