iPod issues....

So 'er indoors gave me an iPod 3rd generation a while ago (got it as a freebie when she went to a taping of an Ellen Degeneres show).
I played solitaire on it a few times, and then put it back in the box. So it sat for a couple of years.

Somehow we don't have the CD that came with it (I suspect my daughter...she's got a bunch of iPods), and I'm not looking to start using it with our home system.
It's formatted for Mac. We have PC's. I'm having a hell of a time getting the driver to make it work with Windows (XP). The automatic thingy on iTunes doesn't iWork. Keeps telling me there's no link to the internet (happily opens iTunes Store though...).

I'm at the end of my iWits.

Also, when I pug into the PC with the USB, the battery just tanks.

Not bloody iHappy.

Anyone got any tips? Is there just an *.exe that I can download and run?

You should just be able to download the latest version of iTunes. As far as I know, its an all-inclusive thing.

Personally, I use Winamp to get music on my iPod from my PC. iTunes is the easiest all-inclusive package, but it didn't suit my needs very well.

But the device itself isn't formatted for Windows versus Mac use...it uses the same firmware either way. Maybe there's a firmware update that you can apply to the device to update it.

At very least, there are 3rd party firmware updates that you can use to replace the iPod firmware altogether. Its a techie/nerdy way to go, and I'm sure that its a pain in the *** but that option is there if the existing firmware doesn't do as you please.

I think I may have to go that route. I'd seen a few things posted here and there on techie/nerdy websites. Geesh.

Thanks for the ideas.

Hahahaha yeah, and they still use that same little .mp3 when you boot it up for the first time.

Its been a recent addition to Winamp. And I love it too. Want all of your Led Zeppelin moved to the iPod at once? Find them in your explorer-style Winamp library, click, drag, drop, done. Want only Houses of the Holy? Find it in your library, click, drag, drop, done. No check boxes. No tracking down songs one by one. NO SYNC PROCESS!!! Tracks are transfered on the fly as you drag and drop them.

The one downfall to Winamp at this point is that it doesn't do a very good job of collecting album art, album and artist info, and song titles. I use WMP for that anyways, but iTunes does offer the better end-to-end solution for iPod management (from CD/internet to music library to iPod).

wow! everything i hoped and dreamed! i HATE iTunes...BUT...here's the kicker..i got rid of 25 gigs of mp3's to make room for podcasts (now at 15 gigs)...i'm so hooked on podcasts, and i've heard my mp3's enough...so i do use the sync thing quit a bit...although i HATE it for mp3 management.

I love iTunes.

I may have an old version of the 3g firmware stand alone at home. If I do I will post it here later.

As well Win Media Player now is the spitin image of iTunes. A little better on the interface side though but Tuna uses it to load his buddies iPods here. We don't and won't do iPod in this house. i'M not going to become an iBot nor will my iChildren.

But ya, try the WMP version 11. Only drawback is you will have to re-install WMP 10 if you still want to keep it as your main mp3 player.

My only draw back with WinAmp right now is they dumped 3 updates in only a couple of months and it somehow F'd up the EQ. So now I have to re-tune the whole damn thing back again to match the sound of my other player's. Otherwise WinAmp is great.

Don't get me wrong on that either. I'm not jumping on anyones case for using the iPod. I just don't care for the iLife crap they toss around. More power to those who got em though. I wouldn't toss one out if I had one for free, but not sure it would be my go to listening device.
