Acid pro 6 and REASON 3 techniques and mixes....

I've been doing some home recording and this is my setup, I guess I just want some feedback about my recording techniques:

Im running a toneport UX2 for all my guitar and bass (I have yet to try vocals, although there are presets for mics) into gearbox and then acid pro 6, im using reason to do sampled kits and programming. This is my basic recording process:

-Lay down guitar tracks in acid with metronome
-Realign waveforms because of some wierd latency issue
-Go into reason and open my already saved redrum rock kit i like
-set the project tempo and record kit
-set loop ends and export loop as audio file
-open saved audio file in acid and line it up with guitar and bass tracks

When I mix in 5.1 surround I usually just keep the kit right in the middle because in reason the individual cymbols and drums are already panned so... I then pan and mix the guitar and bass/ programming around the kit left and right and louder and softer to taste, adding plug-ins as i go along.
Once I have it the way I think sounds good (crappy headphones) I then just export the entire project into an mp3 and send it to my mom (my only fan)

If anyone has any interesting feedback as far as ways to mix or record in acid or reason PLEASE send it this way because im trying to learn everything I can about these awesome programs (cant afford pro tools or cubase and I dont know how to use sonar 6 yet)

Thanks guys

Hey Lex,

I have a Toneport and use Acid 6 Pro and I don't have any latency problems (btw Cubase is cheaper than Acid and has less features, Acid is a great product so I don't know why you seem defensive about it).

Some obvious things just in case.

* Make sure Toneport is selected as your audio device in Acid
* Play with the tone direct monitoring and buffer settings on the Toneport driver

Let me know more specific details of your setup regarding the UX2 issue, can't help with the Reason stuff.

hey thanks for the reply!

Actually I LOVE acid, Im just confused because Im getting better sounding recordings with just acid and reason than alot of bands out there and everyone says pro tools is the 'industry standard' which I think should be changed. I believe everyone should have thier own standard and do what they individually like.
I haven't yet messed around with the toneport settins but I definately will now so thanks for that info.

One of the reasons I want to try something like cubase or pro tools is the fact that I never hear anyone speak on a professional level about acid and I dont want to be left behind, you know? Things like mixing windows and other features that Im not to sure about in acid....

Do you happen to know where to get some really good acid plug-ins? Im starting to get bored with the pre-sets it comes with.

Thanks again!

There's a thread on this forum about Pro Tools. It's industry standard for pro's so if you want to go pro then you might want to go in that direction. For home recorders it's a poor choice, too complex and requiring specific hardware.

My mantra has always been that as a home recorder you should stick with what you are comfortable with until the point at which you need something it can't do.

Here's a few free things:

The Giant Free PluginDatabase
www.gersic.com/plugins/index.php?daCat=-3

www.gvst.co.uk/index.htm

Betabugs
www.betabugsaudio.com/plugs.php

A whole studio of free stuff
homemadehitshow.blogspot....free-stuff.html

I'll have to look around for other stuff. Personally I highly recommend Ozone plugin, not free (though they have a demo), it kills a lot of birds with one stone.

Yep, PT is really not the industry standard any longer. Although you will find it in many upper level studio's it is not the be all end all it once was. I don't use it here and this is a pro level studio. I use Sonar 6 PE alongside Wavelab for 2 track editing and mix down. Acid has come a long way and I know many people who use it from start to finish, save for sending final stereo mix out for mastering. But at the home studio level that is not a must have at the moment for you.

Do you have the manual for Acid? As well it should have some built in tutorials in the help section.

Here are a couple of sites that came up on google that have tutorials for using Acid. www.google.com/search?q=A...lient=firefox-a

Otherwise try Acid Planet. www.acidplanet.com/ They are everything Acid and then some.

As for the UX-2 I also use that along with a POD xt and don/t have any latency issues. Let us know what your system spec's are and maybe we can help get you straightened away.

Wow you guys are awesome, thank you so much!
Im gonna try every single link...
As far as system specs go, I have a dell D600 laptop with a pentium 4 M 1.4, 60 gb hard drive, 2 gigs of ram, radeon 9000 graphics, sygmatel audio (not too good)
I have my laptop docked and im using sterophones to do everything...
Yeah Im pretty sick of pulling the wave forms back trying to line it up with the metronome so any help with that would be awesome.
Thanks again guys, im gonna play around all night now..

You mention the soundcard. I wonder if you are aware that the TOneport is your soundcard when recording. If you are recording through the Toneport but listening through the PC output there's your problem. You need to record through the toneport and listen back through the Toneport.

IF you have a UX-2 then it has direct monitoring and you simply plug your headphones in there. Disable the sigmatel and use the UX-2 in ASIO mode. Then simply plug your headphones into the UX-2 and your good to go. No latency or having to re-align the audio at all.
