New rating system for music

I implemented a new rating system for music, a simple 10-star scale, click on the star of your rating and good to go. I love how it's getting used the last day or so. Keep it up. Now the old rating system is just comments, no thumbs up/down or anything.

Good luck to you all but I personally have never really liked the idea of rating people's home made music. I'd have to discourage someone because of a bad score and everyone is entitled to make and deliver what ever they want in my opinion.

It took me a while to form this opinion but this is where I am personally at right now.

I'm all for a star rating indeed. Besides, there is room for comments to give a bit of advice on why you may have only given a few stars. Another thing is if you don't feel like giving a low rating, simply don't give one at all and only leave a comment. That is what I normally have done in the past, and will continue to do so.

you don't HAVE to rate tony...you can rate, or leave comments, or both...your music gets rated if you put it online, whether public or private, this is a site that people learn from, it's one way to learn.

I also need to add a checkbox to music uploads to indicate whether or not they want it to go into the members music section...if it's just up there fore review or for a short term, they may not want it there...

I gotta work out a new player too someday...

All good, don't misunderstand me I wasn't criticizing just stating my opinion.

Yep, I didn't figure you were being critical.

Good idea on that dB, that would make total sense for someone just looking for a quick critique.

Yeah, I didn't think you were criticising at all...

The "make this song listed" option is now available for each song...it's on for every song currently uploaded right now.

Rating is good. That's a fast way why one project gets higher/lower rank than another and work out ways to improve. $0.02.

But ciinx, the appreciation of music is opinion based. If a guy gives you 5/10 then you still might have a great song, it's just that the one person doesn't like it. Imagine someone experimental like Bjork or worse :) posting on a forum and getting ripped for "no hook" etc.

Well, that is where the average of many (hopefully) votes comes into play, a good average of personal opinion...with comments to detail it.

Just curious...
If someone were to rate my music, would I be able to see what score they gave me, or is it pretty much anonymous?

I got your point tony and you were not all wrong. Nobody should judge one's music since that depends on personal taste.

But think about rating the technical parts of a project. I mean the track mixing, panning, eq, compression, quality of work and stuffs. That can do good to many.

Bjork? Err.. I'm not saying anything.. shh

Cheers tony!

Users are marked on comments left. Ratings using the star system are logged by user but only an overall average is displayed. I HAVE the user info, only logged in members can rate or leave comments, each member can only rate each song once and leave only one comment. Users can not rate or comment on their own music.

I am considering adding a list of what each user rated each song only for the song owner, which is why I started gathering the data in the first place but I haven't added that yet.

To be honest I am surprised this simple little rating system (which was requested by a few people wanting a quicker easier way to rate) has generated more posts in a thread than it has RATINGS. :-)

dB, I've been clicking a few.

The comments are useful, but personally, I don't take the numerical ratings too seriously. I see the scheme, on the whole, as just another way for members to interact with one another, and it adds an element of camaraderie. I don't think anyone should suffer hurt feelings because of star count.

See, that's me too, Herb. It's a way for all of the members to have input into content, communicate with each other, it will be another factor in figuring charts and such, and it may, in the future, be a way pull the ol' "if you liked this song then you might like these songs" type of feature...lots of options...but mostly, just fun...plus I got a chance to program a little more with AJAX which I haven't had a lot of opportunity to do...and HRC started as, and remains, my little playground to teach myself new stuff :-)

A star system is going to relatively arbitrary as people will have different criteria for rating. The comments are much more helpful (in my mind) as I can use "the bass is too loud!", better than I can use "*****".

By the way, I made an oops in my rating of a song. I gave two stars when I should have given at least eight!!!! But who cares, really? My comments were much more valid than my (albeit unintentionally)lousy star rating.

Ah, upgrade coming tonight..."are you sure you want to rate this # stars?" confirmation box.

Thanks, good idea! :-)

You are right, it is arbitrary, just fun...

It's all good discussion right :)

This all comes from an unpleasant experience I had elsewhere that's pretty common. A guy I know who's new to songwriting went on a forum with a pretty rough song though it did show some good creativity. He was savaged, low rated etc. I haven't been able to get him to write a song since.

Tony, you should have that guy read this thread:

tonyoci, that is something that won't happen here. No one, no matter how bad a song has been has trashed another member. Given advice yes, made them cry no. That is the difference here, no one is out to trash another member, unless they are being abusive or deserve a good trashing. So I like ability to give a rating as well as commenting. And as dB stated, its kinda fun as well.

Now everybody start using it!!
