hey man great song. did you write it? i love the different themes and moods it goes through. quiet and reflective, strong and dynamic, but it doesn't sound unnatural at all, great bridges between everything.
the mix is well done. it sounds more like a well-recorded live track than a studio recording. what kind of mic placement were you using on your acoustic? or are you using the pickups. or both? it sounds great. your solo was kickass as well, i just wish it was longer.
your voice is strong and clear, and the song is sung well, but i kept wondering if this song wouldn't do better with a softer singing style. that could depend on anyones taste though.

Hey Hafler, thanks for the positive feedback! Yes I did write it. I just got an akg perception 100 condenser mic last weekend and recorded this last sunday. I set up the microphone about a foot and a half away from the acoustic and aimed it a lil at the neck to get a tone similar to wonderwall by Oasis ( Less bass from the sound hole) for some reason I like slightly lighter and thinner sounding acoustic guitars. I then recorded the vocals with my mouth about 1 foot from the Mic. not sure if this is where I should have been but I liked the sound that came out. Someone said to me if you get too close to a condenser mic it sounds bad? I really appreciate the feedback, and it was actually refreshing for you to wonder what it would sound like sung softer. Because on the myspace music forum, people thought i should sing louder on the chorus, but thats the whole point of this song is the dynamic is more quiet there.

i'm a yinzer too; hi rob!

cliffriff and i were wondering about 'breath sounds' in tracks. who here works to eliminate them and who leaves 'em in?

depending on the singer, i usually just 'tame' it by droppin' them but not competely eliminate them....takin' 'em all out sounds strange and unnatural...if it's not distracting i'll just leave 'em in outta my own lazyness (i automate them when i fix it)....sometimes it's just in one or two spots that are really bad....when i was mixin' DBD's stuff i had to tame almost EVERY breath, cuz josh was gasping for air from screamin' so much. that sucked. cuz i had up to 5 vocal tracks to do it on. OooOoh that reminds me, if you have more than one vocal track playin' at once, be real careful here cuz if you got two different sounding 'inhales' before a verse or whatever, it's super-distracting.

btw what's a yinzer?

Yep, breath sounds as well as some sibilance can really add to the feel of some music pieces. My general rule is to cut back slightly on it rather then totally loose it. But again it is really a matter of taste and if it adds to the feel of the music. I think Dungbeetle has a piece that he did with his daughter posted here someplace that uses that effect a tiny bit. As well I know dragonorchid/Michelle had some great track with her band as well as a couple others with female singers that really used it well for a very intense expresive feel to the track.

Although I do try and rid the heavy breathing from most music in some of the really heavy stuff breath sounds can as well add to a certain feel.

A yinzer is what we Pittsburgh folks affectionately refer to each other as. In our regional dialect we say the word yinz or younz instead of saying you all or y'all.

eg: Are all yinz going?

So we call ourselves yinzers... :))

Where you from Fortymile?

If your worried about the song sounding breathy, it didn't sound half bad here. I agree the dynamic of it was great. Enjoyed it for sure. Nice song indeed.

Thanks for the positive feedback! Hey just curious, how close do you guys get to the condeser mic when you do vocals?

IT really depends on the vocalist and whether using compression on the way in or not. For the most part a good condenser will allow anywhere from 3 to 6 inches. But you will want to listen for proximity effect as that will increase or decrease the low end response it gets.
