Crime is sooooooo on the rise

Man, there has been more violent crime going on in the Twin Cities the last few months...I am not sure why I am so mad now, but I just heard a couple stories that piss me off.

There have been 2 murders and three violent attacks on public transit buses, murders and muggings in the streets, some random, some gang activity...just an extraordinary amount crime lately.

Some of it may well be the media hype and them wanting to keep people scared. I can't even say I'm scared, I am just pissed. WTF is with people...how can one just randomly shoot and kill people you don't know, have no grudges with...ya know?

Virginia Tech...how could a guy do that, Columbine...

I don't know man, it's moving out to the burbs when I live too...

Another thing I have noticed, lately when they give descriptions of suspects on the news, quite often the only time they mention skin color is if the perp is white...

Minnesota has been a major supporter of immigrants from many places, and as more and more are taken in, there is more and more crime. I can't say it's connected, but it's true.

dB...I hear what you're saying. We just recently subscribed to Dish Network television. For some reason unknown to me, the local channels we get are yours from the Twin Cities. Consequently, I've been watching a lot of your local news lately.

The thing that strikes me (other than how hot Julie Nelson is) is all of the violence up in your area...like you are saying. My wife and I look at each other and shrug our shoulders... Every night there's something else. Murders, robberies, drug busts...doesn't give a person much to be hopeful about.

This whole story about the kid who was shot on the bus really infuriates me. The accused's family is making a media spectacle out of the whole thing, and really making themselves (and all Native Americans) look really stupid in the process.

I guess things are tough all over...

Yeah, Julie Nelson is a hottie for sure...Marni Hughes is pretty easy on the eyes too...

The bus thing is insane...those 40 or so supporters are incredibly stupid...everyone is so sure he didn't do it, he wasn't there, etc...yet there is a bus full of witnesses, video tape and now they took gun powered analysis tests...I mean be serious. No father wants to think his kid would do such a thing, I feel for him in that level, and just think of what my dad must have felt like a couple times (though I never killed anyone) when I was doing stupid ****...

It's crazy...even a little gas station by Noize's place (about 5 miles from my house, like 1/4 miles from his) in a little 'burb has had muggings and pistol whippings...then the bar that got raided yesterday, 17 drug arrests in one downtown bar, in an admittedly tough area...

The Twin Cities used to be a "little big cities"...big cities in comparison to the rest of the state and surrounding states, but didn't have big city problems...now they do...

I had a neighbor get broken into a few weeks back, which, well, it happens, but ya know, you move a ways out hoping for some more padding from that, then in an effort to keep the city growing, in their infinite wisdom they build loads of townhouse communities and stuff, and, while I have nothing against trailer parks or townhouse communities, they are cheaper, and when they come in, so does crime...sad to say. Then the local leaders act all shocked when crime is on the rise.

I found a house a bit further out, and about 5 minutes from work, with about 3 acres of land, a pond with fish in the front yard on a country road...really considering the move...get another step further out. The pond would rock, I was just telling flame about it on IM yesterday, big enough for decent sized Koi but small enough where I could likely heat it and care for it myself.

Sweet, I've got ~2 acres in town (small town) and it's great.

Though heating a pond in MN might be a chore =). Better get one of those outdoor wood stoves, like I got. That'd work a treat for heating something like that.

Though, they ain't cheap.

I work for Hearth n Home (parent company of Heat n Glo, Heatilator, Quadrafire, etc), fireplace and stove makers...I can likely get my hands on one or two :-)

By "heating" I more or less mean "keep it from freezing over" :-)

Personally, though I hate to be a pessimist, I think this winter is going to be a problem for an awful lot of people primarially due to gas and food prices.

Cheap bread is already around $2 a loaf and the price of gas went up during this spring (around $2.80 in central ohio now) Thats not a good combination for urban poor who can't stretch any further without breaking into drug money... these are NEEDS... so you either have starving drug addicts or a large portion of society going though withdrawl. - both lead to higher violent crime :)

I hear analysts are saying the economy is going great... just look at the DOW, but I think a lot of that is people sinking money into equity so they doint accidently have cash in the event the economy dies this fall.

Yeah, I have thought about that too, gas prices on the rise.

Please Note Sarcasm:
fortunately global warming will lessen the need for heat

Sorry, but I have little sympathy for drug addicts...I have been there, they are there by choice, **** 'em. They choose drugs over food, let 'em starve. It is fixable with some effort, but with a society that hates people having to work for anything...well...you know...

I personally don't by the analysts economy comments. I think it is better but there are plenty of problems going on, housing costs are at a stupid level...fortunately that is starting to level itself out now with so many builders being stuck with their homes now they are forced to drop their prices...at least around here. Gas is nuts, but their best foot forward is with E85, which is a horrible alternative fuel...now, I am a heretic of a Minnesotan saying so given we are the #1 maker of it, but it sucks.

What's bad about E85? I thought it was a better solution.

(I'm basing this on very little info, so I'm more ignorant than opinionated)

It has less emissions they claim, and they claim it's cheaper...it is cheaper per gallon but also looses 30% or so of the power a gallon can generate so one has to burn more to achieve same power levels. It also, by nature of what it is, wears out the machinery it powers quicker than gasoline because it's more corrosive, it can't be carried in regular gas lines due to the fact it absorbs grease and grime more than gasoline. Plus gas tanks need to be bigger for decent driving ranges which creates heavier vehicles which creates less efficiency.

Alternative fuel is necessary, but if any of them were viable alternatives, the private sector would be developing it for the vast income it would generate. The only viable alternative that has panned out thus far is the hybred models we are seeing...and the private sector sees that and is developing it.

E85 is just a BAD idea...but then, so is flouride, but the marketing machines keep pushing that crap too regardless of the tumors and cancer that results...it's not about whats best, it's about what make 'em money.

The main interest in ethanol is that it doesn't require a complete replacement of a fleet. You _could_ just throw it in there and it 'should' work but all of the gaskets and 'rustable parts' will need to be replaced afterwards. ...whereas NOBODY is thinking about electric semitrucks. But electric trains hauling national cargo to local ethanol trucks at a depot is easially concievable. Plus , one of our new best friends , Brazil, has a firm ethanol indistry so we know is doable.

...and nobody really knows what the effect of really expensive oil will be on the economy as a whole....besides 'bad'.

OK, so you won't have to replace a fleet right away, but it will wreck your existing fleet quicker...doesn't sound much different to me. it is doable, it's being done, but it isn't proving to be advantageous based on complete cost of ownership.

Besides that, the E85 race car at my local track is a friggin joke...even my 8 year old daughter looked at me and said "why is that car even out there?".

I just heard on the KARE-11 news at 6:00 (with my girlfriend Julie Nelson, a fellow cheeshead, by the way) that there was some kind of a ruckus at the funeral. It seems that several of the accused's family showed up at the victim's funeral to raise a little hell. The service had to be cancelled.

That's classy.

DB, How are the HRC Coffers?

Maybe we could all pitch in for a small island.

Full of Studios, beer and such!

Given the likely consumption we could power everything with methane?

Can I bring Carol to the Island?

Last night I caught a piece on the veg oil powered 66 Impala. That sucker was 800 HP, did 0 - 60 in 3.5 seconds and when driven normal got like 27 - 32 MPG. A big *** car like that getting that mileage from Bio Diesel is alright in my book. Although I am sure they can squeeze more out of a little smaller car.

You can actually go to an restaurant with a deep fryer and pick some up. We build the filtration systems they are now using to clean the stuff enough to burn in cars and trucks.

OK, now last night I hear

- Two guys try to rob a restaurant that is a cop hangout, so an off duty cop shoots the gun out of one guys hand and then shoots him in the mouth...they got him after he called 911 later www.kare11.com/news/news_...?storyid=252586

- Some dude dumped by his girlfriend breaks into her apartment and throws everything he could get his hands on out the window

- Some dude "disciplines" his kid and he is in intensive care now www.kare11.com/news/news_...?storyid=252556

jeezuz, people suck ***.

I remember having to that perticular diciplin when I was younger... like... in Basic Training...

The difference was that we would do it wearing gas masks and if were wern't doing it right the drill sergeant would put his hand over our air intake until we did.

Kids are either kids or adults... never 'little soldiers.'

Now crime is from the gov't.

We are in a local brawl over the funding of a new Stadium for the Twins...the Pohlad family, that owns the team wants gov't (read "taxpayers") help to fund it, yet they just bought a very high end jewelery store chain.

The gov't somehow skirted around a law requiring a vote on sales tax increases for public expenses such as this so taxpayers have no say.

The stadium will have about 30% less seats and ticket prices will therefore be much higher (not to mention the current legalization of scalping). There are few details available about the distances of average seats from the field of play, how far, how high, etc...they just say the best seats are one foot closer to home plate (OK, that answers for those dozen seats, what about us average folks). City and County officials haven't (and seem to not be going to) released details of secret meetings regarding how much Pohlad's will pay...though they will profit from the new stadium.

I could go on and on...this deal is crooked from beginning to end, I have absolutely no idea why privately owned business ever get taxpayers help for anything at all...it just pisses me off.

Minnesota is already becoming one of the highest taxed states in the country...pretty soon I am moving.

I always find it so funny to hear a team owner wanting the public to build them their place of business.

I'm gonna give it a try.

Hey Pittsburgh, I need a new fully decked out recording studio on a prime piece of land in the city proper. How much can the taxpayers cough up to help me fund it?

Can you hear the laughter???????????
