Mixing outside "the box"

Okey, having a weird issue here...

I am running 4 tracks out of cubase into an external mixer thusly:

Track 1 - Output 1 of Delta 44 - Input 1 Mixer
Track 2 - Output 2 of Delta 44 - Input 2 Mixer
Track 3 - Output 3 of Delta 44 - Input 3 Mixer
Track 4 - Output 4 of Delta 44 - Input 4 Mixer

the mixer is routed back into the computer thusly:

Main out 1, Input 1 Delta 44
Main out 2, Input 2 Delta 44

The armed tracks to record back are set:

Input - Mono In 1 (delta 44)
Input - Mono In 2 (delta 44)

On the armed to record tracks, no output is set at this point.

First Issue:
When the sound is hitting the desk it is clipping badly. This was resolved simply by turning down the Main Bus in cubase, but now, even with the desk almost hitting the red, the recorded sound is rather low. Guess I can work around this by just normalizing the tracks.

Issue Two:
For some reason I am getting weird bleed. Like for instance Guitar is track one, and Vox are track two. When I raise the fader on the desk for track 1 it is playing back both guitar and vox, and track 2 on the mixer is vox alone. I don't get this one because everything is sent to it's own channel on the desk.

The volume issue might be a +4/-10 issue on the mixer, can't recall what that's called but it's about using different uh.. levels of gear with the mixer, variations in outputs between gear - do you have a switch on the mixer? I have a little button on two of mine to change it over.

Can't help you with the other issue, sorry dude.

no switch. my mixer is a peice of crap that would be gone if I didn't need the routing it produces and/or could afford a better one at the moment.

What model is it? I can take a look at the spec and try to figure out what's going on if you let me know.

You're looping the signal path .

You'll need a sub-bus if you want to fold the signal back into the mixer . This will allow you to route your monitoring path away from the input of your compy .

This may help...

yeah I thought of that, and I guess theres no way to get around mixing inside the pc right now as the desk I have only has the main outs and one group out... ah well.

Could do the 'insert-half-way-as-a-direct-out-thing', then run the group out to your monitors ?

maybe you've got the preamps on the mixer turned up?

also remember to pan hard L/R on the mixer's channels...that might be where the bleed is commin' from.

yeah it's being paned hard left and right. And hue- problem with that is my monitors crapped out on me so I'm running the RCA tape outs of the desk to my stereo for monitoring purposes ha.

The 'bleed' is coming from the full-circle of his signal path, Chris . : /

Loki... be the signal . : p

Here's a thought...

Plug the outputs of your soundcard into channels 5-8, and use channels 1-4 as the direct-outs to go into the soundcard via the channel inserts. Route channels 5-8 to your monitors/speakers for mix-monitoring via the group bus .

Why is this easier to do than explain ? ha

Dude, you know I wasn't insinuating anything like that . I was commenting on the fact I'm crappy at explaining things like this . Pa-leese, m'a brother .

On top of that, i'm not really sure if this is the fix for you... I may be wrong 'bout that mixer configuration . I'd like to know if I was on, though... really hope that would work for you .
