Where will the madness end?

It's not race, now it's species that want equal rights...

A slippery slope indeed.

I'm all for saving an animal from certain demise in a labratory, but if granting him/her/it the same rights as a human is the only way, I'm sorry to say that the chimp is doomed.

WTF , as jim said i'm all for the "hippy pinko tree hugin crap"(nods to dan) but come on . this is just another example of the weekening of people in general. don't abuse or be cruel to animals but do go over board on the issue. I have a wonderful dog (and have had one in my family all my life) i love my pets and nature, but she's a dog a pet an animal. Have the chimp pay taxes and get a job and then we'll talk.

Oh, sure the goal is admirable, the means by which it's being done opens a very slippery slope for sure!

I am not only seeing rights slip away cuz I'm a white male, but now cuz I'm human... (I'm sure THAT comment won't start a fight)

Quote: One of their central arguments will be that a chimpanzee's DNA is 96-98.4 per cent similar to that of humans

98.4% SIMILAR. So there's 1.6% that's not human. Which part is that? The part that builds space shuttles? As Geoff said, have them get a job and pay taxes.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the preservation of species, and my wife is a total ape nut (I don't want to talk about the boxes of stuffed-toy gorillas in the garage...at least they are in the garage..), but giving them 'human rights' is wrong.

They are also agressive, and due to their inherent strength are very dangerous - www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7087194/
Are these advocates for giving this chimp human rights going to be responsible when he rips someones arm from its socket?

hell there are people in 3rd world countries with less"rights" , lets work on our own speicies first. it kinda goes to my view on "lets work on our own problems before we try and save the world."

Well, typical lefties value the rights of animals over the rights of humans...kill a baby in the womb, but don't kill a chimp...

What's sadder for society, is the quote that 'He' (the chimp) may be able to sue the lab.

That just pretty much guarantees the court systems to crumble:

non-opinionated ape + money grubbing moral-less lawyer = society in general paying out the a$$ for all kinds of stuff.

I hope the judge looks at them and laughs, but I have my doubts.

hahahahahahahaha, I find that comment more hilarious then all of "Bytch Killa's" threads put together.

i find it stupid that they are trying to give something that is NOT a human, HUMAN rights. (i think everybody on earth would agree that apes arnt human) I mean it took us a while to give blacks and women rights, and they are human, and more precisly make up more then half of the human race.

I wasn't going to jump in on this one, but my name was mentioned...

So, this whole thing is ridiculous. Giving a chimp the rights of a human is nonsense. Does he get to vote? The right to free speech (what rights do you have in Australia?) ooh ooh ah ah... I'm just saying. Put the chimp in a zoo if you want to save it right?

do i have to respond to this? I guess so...

While I can only speak for myself (and I do tend to have more of a "left" leaning mindset), I believe in not killing most animals unnecessarily (geese can get it), and do prefer giving animals and wildlife, a chance to live over giving people a chance to profit, IN MOST CASES. Abortion and the life of a chimp are two completely different issues and should be treated as such, not lumped together, in my opinion. And yes, I am generally for PEOPLE having choices.

On the whole, I agree with you, I just felt like poking you with a stick a little :-)

I agree with you regarding the geese especially much.

all chimps have a social security number in this country minus one digit.

no bull, i kinda looked into it once cuz i wanna monkey instead of a kid...it's like a kid that stops growin' up at the age of 3! you can potty train it, speak basic stuff in sign language, and it'll pick the bugs outta your hair! the perfect middle between pet and child...or i guess a midgit can be considered pet-like.

The upside to elevating animal rights to the level of human rights is that medical research could progress much more quickly. Currently we experiment on animals because they are viewed as ...well, lessor than humans. If they are viewed as being on the same level as humans, scientist can just get right to the point and just experiment on humans which would speed up the information we would gain on deadly diseases like ALS many times faster.

Scientist and patients that are wasting away to nothing think the current process of experimenting on mice, chimps and then humans is way to slow as humans wait endlessly for scientist to invent mice that have ALS to experiment on when they already have humans that will most certainly die whether they are experimented on or not.

Elevating chimps to the status of humans could be a very good thing. It could force IRB committees to experiment on humans sooner. Experimenting on animals just leads to many dead ends that could be avoided much sooner while precious human lives are lost while they wait. By all means, elevate all animals above humans. It will save countless human lives and watch medical science progress at the speed of light.

Interesting point Karyn...considering there are many humans with terminal illnesses that are willing to be experimented one...

Still, chimps ain't human, is that raising them up or dragging us down?

That's an interesting point.

< pjk's mind starts to ponder . . . >

If there are soldiers willing to put their life on the line, to further our american way, then if someone who's got some life-taking disease wants to be expiremented on, to further medical progress, then aren't they essentially doing the same thing?

Potentially sacrificing their own life, so many others that come after don't have to endure the same condition.

Plus, there's potential for the patient to have benefit from the procedure as well, so they could, in fact, become better by it.

Just thinking out loud . . .

Very interesting comments. Kinda crazy in a way. I mean human rights in this world seems like it should be worked on a bit first.

No offense taken by this Canuck. The only thing any of us worry about at this time of year is whether or not we will have enough pretzels and beer to get us through the game.

Speaking of game. The lowly MN Wild are in the first round of playoffs against the Ducks. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping to see them go at least a little ways in the playoffs.

Hey Karyn. nice to see you return to HRC. Nice new avatar as well by the way.

Thanks Noize, good to see again too. I love Stewie he's fabulous. Stewie and Brian are one of the great comedy teams of all time. Them and the boys from South Park anyway.

Yep, those two are the most sarcastic little pair on comedy TV right now. I don't get to see South Park much anymore, but I do try to make a little time for Family Guy. :-)
