Hey Guys question about Mics.

Ok heres the deal I do a little recording at home and I am now finding that I've kind of peaked with my sound....with help from folks here they've helped me eq and make space for the vocals in the track but now I'm noticing the mic Im using is simple just not up to standards. Im using an Apex 435, condensor. it has served its purpose and all for only about 130 ish after taxes.

So Im wondering if anyone has any sugestions on a nice warm sounding vocal mic for around 300ish ? or anything reasonable...

Thanks ~ Mike

Sampson I record at home too and I am using the Samson C01U USB Mic. It is an amazing mic with an audio interface built into the mic so you don't need any extra equipment. The sound is very natural I kid you not and the best part about this mic it is only $80.00!!!

I second the 4033, you should be able to get one for that price.

I have the 435 as well and while it does have limits I have found it to be a pretty handy mic to have around. I use it mostly as a room mic lately. So, like yourself I've been looking into something better especially for vocals. I have decided that my next mic is going to be another Apex but this time their ribbon mic. I gets decent reviews although I've never used it before so I won't recommend it to you (yet). Here's one on evilBay (note: not recommending this seller, only an example of the mic).

I will also back the AT 4033. IT is a very good all around mic with a pretty fair warm sound that is in your price range. If you can find a real Oktava MK-319 they as well have a very smooth warm sound to them. But it is getting harder to find one at the moment that is not a fake. If you find one for under $200.00 then odds are very good it is not the real deal. The real unit generally sells for around $275.00 or so and comes in a solid case, not a fake leather bag.

Haha.. looks like i have a fake one then. By fake i guess you mean chinese rather than russian? I actually really like my 319 either way, been using it a lot lately - but it needs a lot of gain on the pre. I'm not so bothered if it's fake to be honest, i paid around £150 for the 319, an AT3035 and an ATM25, which is complete steal. I was considering opening a studio so i was buying up a whole bunch of stuff, now i have more mics that i really need, i think i'm up to about 18, which isn't a huge amount but more than i need. Nice to have the flexibility though.

Ya, some of the Chinese 319's were not so bad from what I have read. Some have even been modded to sound really good in fact. I know a couple of other people who have them and do like them. But I also know some who got them and ended up with complete dud's that fell apart. I like my 3035 as well, not quite as warm as the Oktava but very clean and crisp. I like it on acoustic guitar and for grabbing percussion samples and the like.

I don't think i've actually used the 3035 yet, i'll have to try it on perc. The 319 sounds ace on perc and acoustic guitar too, all the drums on 'Sea Shapes' were recorded with the 319. I hadn't used that before then either, but i thought i'd give it a try as i fancied a change.

Yeah, i've heard a lot about the Oktava mods, though from the UK it seems cheaper to buy a modded one than send mine over to be modded. Though i've considered it with my MK012s.

Oh ya, the 012's are great as well. I love em on acoustic instruments of all kinds and they make sweet over heads or secondary distance vocal mic's. They can catch those little nuance's from a distance and then I just boost em as if it was an echo os sorts.

On the 319 mids, I have only done the one mod to mine but plan on trying the other two I have seen. But I agree it is almost cheaper to purchase a modded one then to send one in and have it done.

Do you have details of the 319 mods? For what i paid for the mic it might be worth me trying it myself. I did electronics work in my late teens and can solder and whatnot so it shouldn't be too much trouble, i just get a little nervous about doing this stuff myself.

Yeah, the 012s are pretty nice overheads, that's what i bought them for, but except for that i haven't used those much either. So many instruments, so many mics and so little time. I'll have to try them as distance mics, they're the only matched pair i have actually so they'd be the best choice.

I don't know why i like talking about mics (and drums funnily enough) so much. Geek i guess.

Rigsby, I have the URL's someplace in my favorites but can't find exactly where at the moment. When I get a bit more time this week I"ll dig them up and post em here.

Hey Rigsby, I know I'm a couple months behind but I finally had time to look for the URL's. Sadly though the other two that had nice descriptive and electrical layouts are not longer good links. But this is the guy that started the original mods for the 219 and 319. www.oktavamod.com/index.html I didn't have time to look and see if he does these in kit form or if he is now only doing the mods himself. I would guess by the price he is doing them.
