I need a new PRE-AMP COMPRESSOR

Can I please get some recommendations for a good pre-amp compressor? It does not have to be the hot name going...

I am in the Voice Over business, and I currently have an HHB Radius 50. I have replaced the tube in it with a Mullard, and it still produces audio that sounds grainy and has lot of pops and clicks. (And yes it is the HHB, as I have tested and re-tested everything in my audio chain. I borrowed a friends Alesis 3630 and got none of the noise that I experienced with the HHB. The only problem is the Alesis is just a compressor, not a pre-amp compressor.

Sorry for the long winded description, I hope I can get some good recommendations.

Just based on readings here and there,

Joe Meek has a few options like that. Pretty good stuff too, I've read.

ThreeQ, that's the one;

I'm sure the list is quite long, but that one popped out to me first.

Yeah that 3-Q was the first thing that came to my mind as well.

Do some Googling with the terms "channel strip" or "recording strip" and see if you find anything that suits your need. They get pretty expensive pretty quickly as the quality increases.

For the price the 3Q is probably the best deal all around. It has a very high end sound and is clean as a whistle or as warm as a curled up kitten. I've used them several times and actually was looking at a used one today at Music Go Round.

the 3Q is great, but the other alternative, is to use the 3630 and a tube preamp such as ART GOLD or ART Studio V3 or something like that, you'll have much more controll of the sound, and it will sound better.

The RNC is just a compressor, and doesn't have a preamp included. If that's OK with you, then yes the RNC is a very highly regarded compressor in its price range. But you'd still need something for a preamp. FMR also makes the RNP, which is again a very highly regarded preamp in its price range. But combine the price of those two units and you're talking about $800 or so.

And I really wouldn't recommend the 3630 unless you're strapped for cash. I've heard a whole lot of negative press about that little unit. I think its price is about the only thing it has going for it.
