Ditching Audition

I have been using Audition 2.0 and its little brother CEP for about 2 years now. I am running into problems with Audition skipping and sputtering when I add effects to process on some of the tracks. So the bottom line is, I am possibly looking into trying a different DAW that is less of a strain on the PC, which from what I have heard Audition is one of the worst out there for PC strain. I would like for the new DAW to be able to use Non-destructive effects like Audition does in its multitrack view, and I like to use Kjaerus Classic plug-ins so it would need to support VST plug-ins also. Ohh, and I need to keep it on the cheap side. Any recommendations?? Thanks.

try www.multitrackstudio.com it's pretty cool, small footprint, light usage and sounds good.

Reaper is lots less cpu intensive than some of the others out there. Most notably, cubase. some of the users have noticed that same project tests showed reaper ran things cubase couldn't, plus 10 tracks more, at the same sample rate / latency.

www.cockos.com/reaper

40$ for the home user license, though it's shareware, so it's fully functioning from the git.

I have a Firepod which came with Cubase LE is this any good?? It says it only supports up to 4 physical inputs/outputs... does this mean I can't record 8 instruments at once??

"LE" is their light edition, meaning it's Cubase Light...full Cubase can handle many more than 4 inputs...that said, Cubase LE is a decent app, just has more limitations in order to get you hooked and you'll hopefully want to upgrade to the full version.

I downloaded Reaper and checked it out. I went to edit a specific track and I got that I need to load an External Editor. Audition comes with its own. Does Reaper have this capability and I'm missing something or does it not have an editor??

I don't think it does. There's chatter from time to time about using external editors.

You can attach one into reaper, and it opens the editor automatically, but not one built-in.

Audacity and goldwave are two that I've been hearing about.

Audacity is cool, Multitrack Studio has an audio editor built in as I recall...

In Audacity, can you apply Non-Destructive effects to a track??

Hi mclir9,

Interesting that you are ditching AuDITCHIN'. I'm guessing that since you used CEP as well that you have been using Audition for awhile. I used AA for quite a while and I too ditched it. I found exactly the same thing. I seems to be more CPU intensive than other products. I loved the program but for some reason Adobe products always seem to be resource hogs. When I bailed I switched to Sonar 6 and I was thrilled to find out that it appears to be an even better program than AA. It does everything that you are expecting but its not cheap.

I use Audition 1.5 and love it. No difficulties at all, even with multiple real-time effects. I decided against the 2.0 "upgrade" because of some negative reviews, including problems mentioned in this thread. The age-old debacle: too many software developers just don't know when to leave a perfectly good program alone!

I very much agree with that sentiment...Sonar is to the point now that I will never, ever use 50% or more of what it can do. It's gotten bigger and better (in the bullet pointed feature list, anyway) but each new version has maybe 1 or 2 things I actually use (freezing and folders being the last couple versions high points.

So, all the new ones do is make you need a bigger computer and/or a new OS...I think it's a conspiracy.

It's been like that with software developers for a long time (and I won't even touch Microsoft and their "bloatware").
Every time you pick up a new shiny box of software and check the 'System Requirements' there has been a huge leap since the last go-around.

I think these software developers have these monster machines, write the programs to the capacity of that machine, and then put it out on the market knowing that 90% (of course, 75% of all statistics are invented on the spot) of the end users will not have a machine that's close to really utilising the software's capabilities.
"Not with THAT graphics card....."

Definitely a conspiracy.

And cell-phones......
"You're not getting reception? Oh, you need to upgrade your cell..."
"I did two months ago..."
"Ah, yes, that was the OLD digital network."

Hmmm, this is just weird to me. Everything I use gets bashed on this board pretty hard. Yet I have no problems with any of it.

I'm on media center 2005
Running Echo Audio hardware
Using Adobe Audition 2.0

hehehe, ironic, huh? People always bashed on WIndows ME yet it worked great for me for quite a while...luck of the draw I guess...

I loved my Echo sound card when I had one, as long as I had a genuine Intel CPU...

Beerhunter you mention you have been in my shoes and recommend Sonar 6. How about Sonar 6 Home Studio or Home Studio 6XL?? They are $99 to $139, not too expensive at all?? I wonder if these versions will give me the same features or better as AA??

mclir9,

I'm using Sonar Producer 6 and it was pricey. I'm not sure exactly how much it was as my company (day job) paid for it. It does however do much more than AA. For example, more routing options, integrated MIDI and IMO a better way to monitor via their echo function.

I don't know what features have been stripped out of the home studio version. Noise2U might be able to answer that however.

I recently bought Sonar 6 PE as well to replace AA 2.0 for the midi and VSTi & DXi support . I believe Sonar 6 HS/XL are mainly lacking in added plugin's, there is a product comparison chart on Cakewalks site that will give you the exact differences. None of the other DAW software has a wave editor as developed as Auditions or with as many features, though you can still use AA's wave editor from within Sonar quite easily, so in that sense you're not totally ditching the investment you've made in Audtion. Audition also has a larger range of import/export options and batch functions so I think you'll still find Audition a valuable piece of software to have around.

One other thing you might want to do is, if you buy Cakewalks downloadable Music Creater @ $24 you can then upgrade to Sonar 6 PE for $349 which is about $100+ cheaper than you can buy it anywhere else and you can also get an idea of Sonars workflow and whether or not you'll like the way it's laid out. You can also get the upgrade pricing on other Sonar offerings but I don't think the saving's would worth it.

Can I still use downloaded plugins like Kjaerus Classic series with Sonar HE??

Yes I'm pretty sure Home Studio supports VST's, I know they work in Music Creator 3 which is the low end of Cakewalks offerings.

This can be a tough game to keep up with. I skipped Cubase SX 2 & 3 and am going to pop for the upgrade to 4 just to stay in the game. Problem being as computers, OS, Plugs, hardware, interfaces, ......... move along you find yourself with an unsuported leg iron. Even if it functions fine for what you do.....or did.

Well I went ahead and got Sonar HE and installed it. So far I like what I see and hear, but I haven't a real great opportunity to play with it yet. I have band practice tonight, I will go ahead and set up some recording inputs and give her a whirl.
