Geez, there are so many knobs!..

Hello! I'm new here, and even newer to home recording.

I have some questions about my newly acquired Alpha unit that I can't seem to find the answers for.

So, here goes:
1. Can I use effects pedals (distortion, wah, flanger) in the line between my Alpha and my guitar (without using an amp)? And if so, can I still plug them into the "Instrument" socket, or do I need to use the "Line 1" socket on the back of the unit?

2. I thought I read somewhere in the manual that I can actually plug my amplifier's output into the "Line 1" socket on the unit, but I can't seem to find it in there again. Is this true?

I already e-mailed Lexicon, but it's been about two days now, and still no reply. I'm very eager to start recording all of these ideas I have.

Any tips at all are appreciated.

Thanks

P.S.
I'm sorry, I forgot to read the Forum Rules before posting. I'll look around the forums for any related topics. But, I guess since I posted this topic already, and in case I don't find what I'm looking for, drop a reply.

Hi, and welcome to HRC.

I wouldn't suggest pluging pedals into your chain. You should plug them between guitar and amp and then mic your amp, or run a "direct out" from your amp to the lexi...NOT a "speaker out"...

I finally got a reply from Lexicon, they said it was okay to use effects. Even though you suggested that I not use effects in my chain, I tried it out. It was... well, it didn't sound bad, but I think I will take your advice anyway.

I just got my new amp today. A Crate XT120R. I failed to realize when I ordered it, that it doesn't have a direct out. Bummer. (It does have a speaker extension, though... >.< ) I guess I'll just have mic it. So, to do that, I just set up the mic in front of the amp, I take it? Any special kind of mic? Is there anything special I need to do with the amp?

I've only mic'd my amp once. Years ago, I set a computer mic in front of the tweeter on the back of my old Fender Champ. It sounded like crap. I had to turn the Low and Mid all the way down, and turn the High, Reverb, and the volume all the way up to get a clear sound. Needless to say, I don't know what I'm doing.

Also, while I'm at it, I was wondering if anyone could offer me advice on the VST Mixer settings in Cubase LE?

Thanks a lot for the advice so far.

there is a good article on this site in the tips section about micing an amp, but yeah, basically all you are going to do is push a dynamic mic (like an sm57) right up to the grill of the amp, and start playin. If you were using a computer mic before that's why it sounded like crap.
