Hi all.

I'm wanting to use my electronic drum kit (yamaha dtexplorer)'s Midi OUT to a midi to usb laptop interface so I can then find a way of recording midi drums to a song on cubase and then have it replace the midi sounds with real wav or mp3 samples from my analogue kit. :)

Im sure this is a common thing to do but I really need some help working out the best way to do it.

And is it also possible to do it on the fly ?
that would essentially be like adding potentially unlimited drums to my electronic kit.

I only have 512 meg ram and a centrino 1.5 ghz machine tho so....

Thanks
Shakir

MIDI takes little power to record and playback as a rule. Your PC should be OK unless you chose some massive sample sets when you assign MIDI data to samples.

Hydial69 -

You have on a number of occasions told people that their problem is that they use Cuebase. WHY?

What long terpm experience do you have with it?? A number of people here use Cubae and find it a very effective program. - Me being one of them. Added to this the proffesional studios that use it. Do you think they would use it if it was the worst program out there.

You also state that it is overly complicated, you are comparing it to what? Why do you slate Cubase?

lol, i know, like i said, its my persoanl preferance to stay away from it.

but im comparing it to prettymuch any current cakewalk software like project5 v2 and sonar

and ya i know lots of studios use it, but a lot more have been moving more towards alternatives lately becase of high cost and other reasons i have stated,

also i know i havent used cubase asmuch as somone like loki, but he has, like he siad, prettymuch been working with it since it came out, so he knows how to get stuff done.

for somone like me that has a not short but definantly not long attention span, trying to figure out cubase and all of the little enoying things is just not worth it to me and after a while i get fed up.

but im not saying that it is over all crap

im saying that it is overly complicated in the matter of how, for example, the tascam us-122 comes with cubase le, but i followed the instuructions, my friends followed the instructions, my friends dad whos a computer tech guy, had extream trouble getting it to register as a device.

now i know someone will say, but that was only le.

i ahve also used cubase sx3, and infact it is good for some things from time to time. but i dont think anyone on this site can say that it is an incredebly simple program.

anuther agumentative thing to prove that people are moving away from cubase is, db and noize both use allot of sonar, and p5 v2. so if u wanna put a trusted face on it then there ya go. im sure one of them will comment eventually.

but its sorrta like protools in a pro enviorment, people are slowly moving away from cubase and into the more simple programs that offer the same stuff, and with cakewalk allot of sample and synth stuff.

no hard feelings takin, just trying to figure out why you're bashin a great daw is all. Now I know, and knowing is half the battle... the other half is violence.

Now onto the question this thread started with:

Ok, so you want to record a MIDI file, and then replace the notes with like a wav file for the hits? I don't think this will work, since MIDI data is not music. It's just data, so you can't replace it with music.

yeah of course you can do this loki!
Thats what midi is for! :)

Anyway I will try to use native instruments battery as a midi/real drum plugin setup.

I must be misunderstanding your question. MIDI is not audio, merely data, so you can't go into a piano roll and replace each midi note with a wav file or anything like that, which is what I thought you were asking how to do.
