alesis mixer input troubles

We connected our alesis multimix 8 firewire to our computer and opened up our recording software (Guitar Track Pro 3). For some reason there is only the main stereo input from the mixer, and not inputs for the individual lines. How do we get it so there is seperate inputs for the different lines?

Did you install the drivers, and are they activated in GTP 3?

That would be my first guess as to what may be the problem.

The drivers are installed. What exactly do you mean by activating them?

You need to go into the audio options section of GTP 3 and select them as you recording and playback drivers. Then you will be able to open a track input or output selection dialog and set the input choices there.

Oh right, it just doesn't list them at all as drivers. All it shows is the main stereo input.

It sounds like the drivers did not install correctly or completely. You should have a list that shows something like this.

multimix 1/2
multimix 3/4
multimix 5/6
multimix 7/8

And it possibly might list them like this.

multimix 1 L
multimix 1 R
multimix 1 stereo

and so on for the rest of the channels.

I would suggest un-installing them and the unit and follow the instalation instructions to a T. These units can be very fincky and the driver install can also be very particular about the order in which things are done.

I've heard that some of those USB and FireWire mixers only output a summed stereo signal, which was a surprise to me. I'm not sure if the Alesis is one of them or not.

I have a Multimix8 FW. You should definitely have 8 mono channels and I believe 4 stereo channels.

If you installed the drivers from the CD I'd say your smart choice is to delete them (there is an uninstall somewhere on alesis.com) and grab whatever the latest drivers from the web are.

**New Problem** Sometimes when i record things it sounds really crappy when i play it back through the speaker (THere's a lot of fuzz and distortion). It doesn't seem to happen all the time though, it was working fine for about half an hour, and then all of a sudden it wasn't working anymore (and i didn't change any settings even) What could be the cause of this problem?

AS you stack up tracks it might be the latency buffer having problems keeping up. That can cause some digital distortion at times. Try raising the buffer a little for playback and mixing.

Also, is it happening when you add effects processing to the tracks?

Well if it is set at the default of 128 or 256 you can try raising it to 512 or higher for playback. Be aware though that when recording new parts you may experience higher latency as a result of raising it higher then say 128 or 256. But a simple work around for that is to simply mute or archive tracks that you don't need playing at the moment and it should help immensely.
