I'm on a kind of tight budget meaning I dont want to spend over 200 dollars on a microphone when I could spend less. Ive heard good things about the SM57, and im basically looking for something to record acoustic guitars and vocals. Is it recommended that I buy a preamp as well?

The 57 is good, acoustic and vocals isn't really it's forte' (in my opinion) but it will ceertainly work. You only need a preamp if you don't alrweady have on in a mixer or some other such gear.

What's a good preamp that I can purchase for a decent price? The Art Mps are popular, and I want to stay away from any digital/computer interfaces.

I can't recomment one, I always have just used the preamps on my mixer, and now, on my TonePort.

Why avoiding computer interfaces? Are you recording on tape? What tape device? Any preamps in it?

If you're recording acoustics AND vocals, I'd go with a sm58 instead. It's basically the same mic, with only the slightest difference in eq curve.
I recorded my guitar cab the other night with a 58, and I couldn't hear much difference between it and my 57's, anyway...
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't they the same capsule with a different "top"? I'm assuming the 58 just has a pop filter thingy aimed at vocals??

The Sennheiser e835 is $100 and sounds great on guitars. Don't know about its maximum SPL though, for really screaming amps.

The reason I'm avoiding computer interfaces is because I live at home now, with a computer. But when I move out, assuming I dont have any access I would have more than enough time to record my music. I've got a four track tascam porta02. I know this gets a little off topic but i'm trying to figure out how to get a full analog setup (mic, mixer, preamp, tape) that won't break the bank.

Well if recording vocals and acoustics, I would lean more towards a LDC mic over either the 57 or 58.

I also have the ART MP, saw them recently for $30 and have no complaints yet, does the job and adds warth. You could pick up one of those and possibly something like this...

www.zzounds.com/a--884907/item--STUB1

or this...

www.zzounds.com/a--884907/item--AKGPERCEPTION200

and for less than $200. Both get good reviews and seem a excellent value for the price.

Once again,

My $0.02

Depending what you consider "breaking the bank" you may actually save money buying a computer...depending on how far you intend to dive into recording.

Yeah, didn't think about the mixer. You have the Tascam, but it does not look too feature rich after searching on it :) Probably get one of the lil Behringer dealies.

yikes, making mimimum wage in one of the most expensive states has to be rough...get the heck of the left coast and go somewhere that has a better cost of living. :-)

That should be your first step.
