Hi Everyone,
Im new to HRC so hello to you all.
I have just purchased an EMU 1820M to start recording my band. I plan use 8 mics to record the drums and bass guitar at the same time.
1 - Kick
1 - Snare
3 - Toms
2 - Overheads
1 - Bass Amp
My question is whether to purchase a mixing desk for its preamps ie. Yamaha MG16/4 or just go with a Behringer ADAT AD800 which can plug staright into the EMU 1820M
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Cheers.

Feb 15, 2007 09:05 pm I am confused... Behringer makes a DAT? I would, at this point, reccomend not buying a DAT unit... just cause I got one and I am having a hell of a time to get it to work. I need to clean the tape heads, and then if that doesn't work find someplace to get them aligned...
Feb 15, 2007 09:08 pm Soory its not an ADAT unit - its the Behringer ADA800
www.behringer.com/ADA8000/index.cfm?lang=ENG
High-End 8-Channel A/D & D/A Converter with Premium Mic Preamplifiers and ADAT® Interface.
Sorry about the confusion.
Cheers.

Feb 15, 2007 09:10 pm Yeah Loki, Behringer coesn't make a DAT . That ADAT8000 unit has an ADAT out... it's an 8 channel pre buit for expanding stuff with ADAT inputs . Nice bit of kit... heard alot of good about that thang .

Feb 15, 2007 09:21 pm matheson8, there are advantages to both . I'm not sure if that ADAT8000 has inserts, eq, and such as a mixer would, but it will only take up a single rack space, and I heard the converters it offers are quite good .

Feb 15, 2007 09:22 pm you have confused teh moderator! you are therefore banned! lol, just kidding. Well I don't know either peice of gear so i can't comment.
Feb 15, 2007 09:27 pm The ADA8000 doesnt have inserts or eq but will connect to the EMU 1820M through the ADAT connection. Which is nice and simple.

Feb 15, 2007 11:17 pm i have a Yamaha mg 16/6fx, and like it to the max. the preamps sounds VERY good for there price. Id go with the mixer just because.. its really always nice to have a mixer around. plus the 16/4 is very cheap. can get it new for like 240 on Musicians frined from what i remember.
thats my 2 cents.

Feb 16, 2007 09:18 am I've got the 16/4, and like it very much as well. I've not heard the Behringer, so I can't comment, but if the preamps are about equal, it would be nice to have the mixer functionality.
Course, with the 1820, you probably could get both, 8 analog from the mixer, and 8 adat from the ADA.
Feb 17, 2007 01:50 am Thats a very good point - having both a mixer and the 8 channel ADA would be quite a setup.
Thanks for your comments.
