If so I have a secret project... without saying much, anyone here make their own Mic Pre, compressor, Reverb unit, Distortion Unit, or EQ?

I make mostly guitar effects. Distortion boxes, compressors, and delays. I dunno what you're trying to do, but im SURE you can get LOTS of help here:

I put together a prototype ribbon mic... I didn't have a stepup transformer laying around so I never finished...painfully easy to build...once you got the extremely powerful magnet that took a week to find unstuck from the nearby metal filing cabnet...

dude, chronicle that in a step by step process with all the parts you used, where you got them, take pictures and stuf, and post it as an article.

er, ok. Then you can all see my constant mistakes =).

I'll get my poop in a pile, and start writing in my blog.

I'm still trying to finish my studio (working on it this weekend) so it will be hit and miss while I work on both.

I'll try to get something together in my blog this weekend.

hee, i hope you can wait awhile =). So far, I've got my schem, and a list of parts.

The fun part is now squeezing the money out for the input transformer, and the power transformer, and the choke =/.

Oh yeah, and the e-caps. Those aren't cheap either.

I guess if it were easy, everyone would do it =).

My construction expertise is more like microphone pop filters built from embroidery hoops, nylons & battery clamps. And I have a degree in electronics.

And I am soooooooo proud.

Kaos - I did, and managed to pull it off, thanks to my knowledge of Ohm's Law.

Our bass player is really good at making stuff,he built a recording studio with band room, drum booth, control room and accommodation, flight cases,pa cabs/monitors.This is very handy cause he does festival rigs and the rest of his time playing bass. He's just made some folded horn bass cabs with 18's like the cerwin vega cabs, but not just one pair, these days he makes enough to cover costs and some of his living expenses. For this way of life you need to be good at self motivation.

That could have been painful if there was too much resistance!

I've made a lot of stuff, but nothing like you are describing. I've modified a pedal or two, I have made a lot of speakers, I've made gear racks, an awesome studio desk, sound control boards and like stuff...

Yeah, I'd love to see some of his stuff. I have made my own monitor systems (twice) a couple hipacks and a couple bins myself, but never for that large of systems, just for small band/bar/club use. The systems I have made have worked in medium sized clubs and sounded pretty darn good though. Plus it's kinda fun and interesting. I don't have any of it any more. I gave them or sold them to friends or other bands.

Noize2u's oldest son has a lighting system I made while I was machining during the day and gigging at night. It was actually a very cool system...toggles for each light color and total blackout, bright colored lights plus option personal spots for each band member. All of it on a truss that bolted to the side of the hipacks and spread overhead, front stage, if I recall fully setup it spread about an 18' stage of so. I made it it's own travel case and everything. It would all break down (quickly) and fit into a 4' x 2' x 1' wooden travel crate.

Yep, and it still gets used. They have some big parties, as most of us did at that age. And they use the lights often. And ya, it was a pretty big rig assembled. They had to get permission from the landlord to hang it up.

Sounds like a very handy lighting set up and the link onto the pa is a good idea.I took some piccy's at last nights gig of a small pa we used and some mon's are on them, but I'm going to Scotland till Saturday on a whiskey mid week bender :)near to Loch Ness.Yes I will keep a look out for the Monster!(and CoCo)then sort out some DIY pa pics later next week.

Good to know it still get used, I put a lot of thought and time into building it, it's not the typical 2x4 and coffee can light rig. It's actual metal trusses with bent metal light brackets and coffee can lights :-)

Yeah, the fact it bolted to the sides of the hipacks we had was great at the time, it saved LAODS of stage space since we didn't need the extra room to the tripods and crap that normally are needed for such systems. All the light toggles and stuff I just controlled with my foot like any other footpedal so it was cool, and worked great for small or medium sized clubs.

Speaking of Charlie, Ben just emailed me that he met Charlies mom (Jackie) when they played in Hopkins this last weekend. She walks up apperantly a bit trashed and stated she had a picture of her son and his father (being me of course) and I was wearing a Rockfist T-Shirt. Nice chuckle I got from that.
