Alesis Multimix 16 & Cubase SE 3 Input Problems (Need help please!)

Hi, I recently purchased this mixer (firewire version) and I'm having a problem with getting cubase se to record all 18 tracks. I have installed all the latest Alesis drivers from both the cd and then the website, and I restarted my pc and plugged the mixer in and turned it on. It was detected, but when I opened Cubase SE 3 (not the enclosed LE, which I know only supports 4 inputs), and set the "Asio Multimix" driver as the master in Device Setup, I looked under VST inputs to find only 8 inputs instead of the 18 that should be there.

After much scouring of the internet I realised that I hadn't actually updated Cubase since I bought it, so I updated that (it did mention something about limited inputs so I thought this would solve the issue). Now cubase can see all the inputs in device setup>VST inputs...

BUT I can only create 4 input busses when I hit F4. Oddly enough, it is limited to either 4 mono busses, or 4 stereo busses, or a compination of the two. When I select the device port on the right, all 18 inputs are visible, but this still basically means that I can't record more than 8 mono tracks (as 4 stereo tracks though).

Does anyone know what I should do next? I really need at the least 16 mono tracks/ 8 stereo tracks. Alesis and Cubase support is really lacking. I can post screenshots if no one can understand what I mean, but I hope I made it clear enough.

I hope someone can help me :)
Pete

Pete, let me do a little digging and I'll get back to you on this. I know there are many issues out there with these firewire mixers stating they can record 18 an such inputs at once. I am honestly not sure if there are limitation's in the software or the hardware. But I know it is an issue that has yet been unresolved for many at this point.

Has anyone found out why this does not work.

Cubase SE is limited to 8 simultaneous inputs. If you are tracking drums, I would highly recommend using fewer mics. The more mics you use the more phase problems you will have. A good drum take can be had with as few as 4 mics regardless of how big the kit is.

Look here for Cubase SE features:
