I don't care what they say, I have fond memories of my ADAT! (Of course, I'd never go back!) The old Irish Folk band I used to play recorded an entire album with two ADATs synched up together through a big old soundcraft board. We got a good drunken night in a pub sound out of that setup!

Can't wait to hear your recordings!

yeah I just need to find the manual online which is proving more difficult than I thought it would be, and get some 1/4" to RCA cables and some tape and I'm good, cause I'm pretty sure I can't just use vhs tapes even though they look like em lol

hahaha i just realized i will need at least a 16 channel mixer to use this thing. 8 channels on the desk for input, 8 channels on the desk for output.

Yeah, when I had an 8-track cassette machine I had an Alesis 16 channel mixer, eight for the ins, 8 for the outs, it worked great, but damn, that old Alesis mixer sucked ***.

I ran my ADAT through a Mackie 16 channel. I had one of those ELKO (sp?) audio snakes that had the big block on one end and 1/4" plugs on the other end. Nice, but pretty pricey. I bet they can be had on ebay for a song.

And, yeah, I think you really need the special tapes. I tried some S-VHS tapes that supposedly worked, but I had problems unless I used the Real Mccoy. Again...I'm sure eBay has 'em for cheap.

yeah I spent about 4 hours last night trying to get a vhs tape to work lmao I would put it in, it would say NoFo (format) so I did the whole process of formatting it, and then reset it and it would say NoFo again, so I would try again... and again. but yeah I have found tape online for cheap, gonna see if the local guitar center has any though.

hmmm I just bought a alesis brand adat tape, so I know it's the right one, and it's doing the same thing. Do I just not know how to work this thing, or did I buy busted gear?

yeah I have the LT-user manual, and I am doing everything it says for formatting. What happens is the tape goes through the whole process of formatting, and then when i hit rewind it says "No Fo" and the format light flashes. the user manual doesn't really adress that problem. Thanks anyway though

ooo... hopefully it's just dirty heads...otherwise I think thats means the heads are out of alignment... which is usually caused by old analog folks cleaning the heads wrong :) ...and is very bad... requires service. :P

First try cleaning the heads...decide which cleaning method you want to deal with... I think dry tapes are the current suggestion. ...but if the ADAT tapes use a wet lubricant you could clean the heads and **** up the transport by filling it with mud.... but I think ADAT is dry...

If you bought it used and it was probably unused for a while it's probably just really dirty heads...

I know it's been sitting on the shelf at music go round for at least a few months. I am hoping it's only dirt heads, as I am in no way knowledgeable enough to try and align the heads.

I think I mentioned this before that the reason they dropped the old tape format was because of the high maintenance they required. They were a great machine and all but were not easy to keep running. The slightest bump and you were looking to get them serviced.

yeah I figured somewhere in this thread would be "dude what the ___ i told you so" lmao. But hey... it was pretty much free. I traded in an old peice of gear i never use for it. I'm gonna try my hand at cleaning it this week and see if that helps. and if it doesn't I'll probably end up keeping it anyway just to own a peice of recording history.

I would have a look around at some tech places to see if someone can do it on the cheap.
