hi there!
I just want to hear your suggestions on solid dynamic mic for acoustic guitar. as I dont have phantom power on my maudio fast track usb, I decided to buy some dynamic. one day I'll save for phantom and good condenser but till then this should do the work. lets say I'll spend up to $100 for it, used probably on ebay :)
for now, on my mind is sennheiser e385.. any other advice??
thanks,

goran

Not too shabby at all. For now I use a dynamic along with 2 condensors for acoustics. Spread across the brige(C), hole(D), fretboard(C).

this guy on the forum in my country swears about sennheiser e835. he has sm57 too and says its nothing comparing to this sennheiser.
he made this with e835

pretty nice for dynamic mic. I think I'll go for it..

(preamp is Behringer MIC2200, into E-MU 0404, B1 mic for the vocal)

yeah, that sounds better then the sound i could get out of my sm57. so id go with it if thats the sound you want.
though a sm57 is very versitile so, it would be very useful down the road.

good luck

I would just keep saving until you can afford a condensor and a little phantom power box or a preamp or a small mixer.

A dynamic won't sound particularly bad, but a condensor will pick up more high end sparkle, and also more of the room. Whether that's a good thing depends on how your room sounds.

Oh wait, you've got a B1? Heck, just use that for the acoustic. It'd pick up as much if not more detail than a dynamic mic would.

Tadpui you misunderstood a bit. THAT guy on the other forum has B1. he also has Oktava 012.. probably he likes more his sennheiser on some tracks than those two mics :-/

I'd be quite surprised if that guitar sound came just from the sen dynamic. I have one and it's not bad but there seems to be a lot of sparkle in that. I know there's alot of reverb but it sounds like there's an exciter on it or something. Am I wrong?

Probably.

My advice would be to get the 57. You will always find a use for it even when you upgrade.

Oh sorry I see. Still I'd save up for a condensor if you're going to be recording acoustic guitar and vocals with it.

But if you're going for a dynamic, my saying is that if you're going to own only 1 mic, make it an SM57. Its one of those "jack of all trades, master of none" kinds of mics. It doesn't necessarily shine in any one area, but it doesn't suck for any application either.

On the SM57 vs. e835 debate:

I own both, and I'm a big lover of the 57, but I think the e835 may have a little bit of an edge on high end presence for acoustic guitar.

oh thanks people on advices. actually my priority is to have nice acoustic guitar sound. I was also looking at akg c1000s as it doesnt need phantom. so it goes on batteries too. but I've red some reviews that its a bit harsh mic. what do you think of it? or is there any other good condenser that goes on batteries??

Well I'm the guy who performed and recorded. The guitar (Yamaha APX5, very old, solid top) has a lot of sparkle by itself.

No exciter. I hate exciters. Part of guitar sound comes from B-1 LDC, a vocal and a guitar were recorded concurrently. There is a little bit of plate reverb on the guitar track (SIR), Voxengo GlissEQ, Marquis Compressor, and Stereo Touch.

Here is a dry guitar track, as it was recorded (it's not normalized so turn your volume up). Just a short clip (9 seconds) from the beginning, you can hear the vocal as caught by the Senn.
